Description

T. WOOD. Y
Coal Oil Burner.
No. 56,655. Patented July 24, .1866.
n. PETERS. Pbclo-Lvihugnphef, Wanhingion. a. c
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TWENTYMAN WOOD, OF WESTPORT, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-OIL BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,655, dated July 24, 1866.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, TW NTYMAN W001),
} of Westport, in the county of Fairfield, Connecticut, have invented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction and Operation of Coal-Oil- Lamp Burners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a view of my improved burner, showing both sections of the shell in position; Fig. 2, a view of the same showing the upper section of the shell partially removed from the lower section; Fig. 3, a view of the same showing the upper section entirely removed from the lower section, giving access to the wick-tube.
In the drawings like parts of the invention are designated by the same letters of reference.
The nature of my invention consists in certain improvements in coal-oil-lamp burners, as hereinafter fully set forth.
The presentim provement consists in a ready, simple, and direct means of removing the chimney and deflecting-plate from the position they occupy over the wick-tube, in order that access may be had to the wick-tube to trim the wick, either before or while burning, or to light the lamp.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same.
A shows the lower section of the shell of the burner, in which is inserted the wicktube B.
c are two cross-bars inserted and held within the lower portion, A, of the shell. These cross-bars are intended to receive between them the parallel levers d (I, attached also to the cross-bars 0 inserted and held in the lower portion of the upper section, D, of the shell of the burner. To this upper section, D, is permanently attached the deflecting-plate E,-and upon it also is held the chimney of the lamp. 1
Myimproved burner being thus constructed, the operation may be thus described.
As previously stated, the object of this invention is to allow the party using a lamp provided with my improved burner to readily and expeditiously have access to the wicktube for the purpose of trimming the wick before or while burning, and to light the lamp without the necessity of removing the glass chimney or the deflecting plate from the lamp, and to readily cause the same to resume their proper position over the wick tube. This object is effected by the employment of the parallel levers attached to the upper and lower sections of the shell, as shown, so that by simply raising this upper section away from the lower section of the burner a lateral movement is given to this upper section, to which is attached the deflecting-plate and chimney, by which vertical and lateral movement combined the upper section is raised sufliciently to clear the wick-tube in its transit, and is carried away from the lower section of the shell until the parallel levers have been extended to their fullest extent. When this is done the chimney and deflector are removed from the wick-tube and occupy the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. In this position of the chimney and deflector it will be seen that free access can be had to the wick-tube.
hen desired to restore the deflector and chimney to their position over the wick-tube, the movement first described is repeated and continued until the upper section of the shell falls directly over and upon the lower section of the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Giving to the upper section of the shell a combined vertical and lateral movement, substantially as shown, for the purposes indicated. I
2. Combining with the upper and lower sections of the burner the parallel levers, attached as shown, when the same shall be combined substantially as herein described, and for the purposes specified.
TVVENTYMAN WOOD.
In presence of A. SIDNEY DOANE, CHAS. E. FRosT.
