Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
c. o. ToRRENcE, 0E RTPLEY, OHIO.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentiNo. 56,639, dated July 24, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, C. C. TORRENCE, of Ripley, in the county of Brown and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Valve-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom pan yin g drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a lock made and applied according to my invention to the throttle-valve of a locomotive, the interior of the lock being partly shown. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a section through the guard and lever and lower end of the lock.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a lock to secure any kind of slide throttle-valve and prevent its being opened unless by one having a key.
In this example of my invention the lock is fitted to be used with the throttle-valve of an engine, a portion of the boiler heilig shown in red outline, and also the rod of the throttlevalve, for the purpose of making the explanation of the invention more clear.
The letter A designates the lever by means oi' which the valve is Worked, said lever being pivoted at its lower end between short standards B. O is a slotted guard, in the slot of which the valve-lever moves in and out. D is the lock. It is held upon the outer face of the lever by means ot' screws E E working' in the elongated slots at the ends of the lock-plate, so that the lock is allowed a limited movement of the lever.
The body ofthe lock is hollow, and is made large enough to contain a spring-catch, F, whose lower end is pivoted to the sides of the body, one end of its pivotl being formed into a button on the outside of the lock, and the edges of the button being suitably notched to receive a key, I, so that the catch can be turned or raised against its spring.
The face of the lever beneath the lock is notched-at two or more places to receive the edge or tooth ot' the catch, the lower sides ot the notches being beveled to allow the catch to descend from one notch to another, but their upper sides being made square to prevent its movement upward. The catch is held down against the lever by a spring applied in any suitable way.
The sides of the lock are made to embrace the edges of that face of the lever along which it moves byforminglips along` its sides, said lips being cut away under its lower end to permit that end ofthe lock to interlock with the guard by entering its slot at the place ofthe notches G G on each ot' its inner edges, said notches being made at the level of the outer face of the lever when it is at the bottom of the guard.
The construction of the lock and the manner of applying it to the lever may be modified in many ways without departing from the principle ot' my invention.
The spring which holds the catch down may be made strongenough to prevent the lock from slipping down out of the upper notch of the lever, requiring a little force to make the catch slip over the intervening ridge to the notch next below, but when it is desired to unlock it or to move the'lock to a higher notch the catch must be raised by a key.
Suitable notches can be made in the' edges of the slot in the guard to enable the lock to be applied to secure the lever at such positions as are desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the lock D, slotted guard C, and the valve-lever A, substantially as described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 3d day ot April, 1866.
C. C. TORRENGE.
