IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRT-COLLAR ATTACHMENT.

Speccation forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,610, dated July 24, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES PROUD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fastening for Attaching Collars to the N eck-Bands ot' Shirts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and usev the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciication.

The present invention relates to a novel fastening for attaching' or securing a collar to the neck-bands ot' shirts, whereby the soiling or injuring` of the collar is prevented, and if a turned-down collar,77 so called, it is not required to turn it up in order to secure it to the back button of the shirt-band, as is now the case, the advantages ot which are obvious.

A in the drawings represents a shirt-collar, which may be made of linen or paper, to which collar, at the point of the same where the button-hole is made for buttoning it to the back button of the neck-band ot' a shirt, my improved fastening B is attached. This fastening consists of a plate, C, made of metal, hard vulcanized india-rubber, or other suitable inaterial, with a circular shaped or round opening, D, ot' a size corresponding, or nearly so,

to thatgot the button of the shirt, from one side of which opening D extends a narrow straight slot, E.

To the back of the plate O a pin, F, is hinged or pivoted in a similar manner to that of breast-pills, and an eye, G, is secured for holding the pin fastened. By this pin the plate() is fastened to the collarin such a position that the end of its slot removed from the circular opening will correspond to the position ot' the back button-hole of the collar, when by slipping the plate by its circular opening over the back button ot' the neck-band of the shirt, and then pulling the collar in the proper direction to bring the slot under the said button, if the ends of the collar are then buttoned to the front button ofthe shirt, the collar will be necessarily fastened thereto, as is obvious without any further explanation, the use of the plate O dispensing with the` necessity of turning up the collar if a turned-down collar, so called, is used, and preventing the soiling or injuring of the collar-two important desid` erata and advantages-besides increasing the facility and ease with which the collar can be buttoned to and i'inbuttoned from the shirt.
