Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS Gr. ODELL AND BOYD GLOVER, OF CAMP POINT, ILLINOIS.
llVlPROVENlENT IN HAND SPINNING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,600. dated July 24, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS G. ODELL and BOYD GLOVER, ot Camp Point, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spinning-Machines 5 and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being Ahad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side View of a spinning-machine made according to our invention. Fig. 2 is a rear View of the lower part of the apparatus.
Similar .letters of reference indicate` like parts.
The object of this invention is to produce a spinning-machine for domestic use which can be used in an upright position standing on a common table, or in a horizontal position clamped to the edge of a table.
The letter D designates the frame which supports the several moving parts of the machine. Onthe top of the frame is formed a bearing for the axis of a pulley, A, on the front end of whose axis is lxed a pinion, B, that engages with the teeth ot' the large cogwheel O, whose axis K turns in a bearing formed at about the middle of the height of the frame D.
The spindle Fis carried in loops L L', which are connected with or are part of a plate, G, which is secured to the frame D in an adjustable manner by a set-screw that passes through a vertical slot, H, into a hole tapped in the frame. The loop which holds thel hinder end oi' the spindle F goes through a hollow boss, M, of square form, and is fastened in the inner side of the boss after passing through it.
The boss M is received in a vertical slot, N, made in the frame, whose length is greater than the height of the boss, so that the latter is permitted to be raised and lowered in the slot. This is for the purpose of allowing the slide to be raised and lowered in order to bring the spindle to aproper position and to tighten or loosen the band E, which goes from pulley A around the pulley I of the spindle.
In whatever Aposition the plate G is placed it is secured by means of the set-screw that passes through slot H of the plate.
The bottom of the frame isso formed that it can be set upright on a common table or bench or be iixed to the edge of a table. In the latter case the part Q will come on the top of the table and the part O be braced against its frame or leg, while the edge of it will be received in the interspace P. In both positions the frame is secured to the table by screws or other fastenings.
The loop L', that supports the spindle forward of its pulley I, is fixed at the end of an arm, J, which projects from the edge of the plate and extends over the pulley7 I.
The wheel O is turned by a crank placed on its front side7 and the motion of this wheel is communicated to the band-pulley A through the pinion B.
We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I l. The arrangement of the frame D, made as described, the cog-wheel O, pinion B, bandpulley A, and spindle F, the whole forming a portable spinning-machine for domestic use, substantially as above set forth.
2. In combination with the above, 4the adjustable plate Gr, for holding the spindle, made and applied to the frame D as described.
THOMAS G. ODELL. BOYD GLOVER.
