Description

JOHN M. BUTCHER, OF NORTH LEWISBURG, OHIO.
IMPROVED VARNISH.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,526, dated July 24, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. BUTCHER, of
for producing, at small expense and very slightlabor, a perfect brilliant black polish upon the surface of leather, canvas, and other materials; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
Take alcohol, one quart; gum-shellac, eight ounces; gum-camphor, one ounce; Prussian blue, one-half ounce; drop-black,one-quarter ounce; lamp-black, one-eighth ounce. Dissolve the gum-shellac and the gum-camphor in the alcohol, add the other ingredients after finely pulverizing each separately, mix thoroughly, and it is ready for use.
It is valuable in all cases where a brilliant black polish is desired, such as for harness, buggy and carriage covers and trimmings, boots, shoes, &c.
For this compound I claim the following advantages, rendering it, for the purpose above named, superior to all other compounds heretofore known or invented:
First, it is perfectly black and brilliant.
Second, it is exceedingly durable.
Third, it is entirely water-proof.
Fourth, it gives a fine polish on an oily surface.
Fifth, it is most easily applied, it only being necessary to lay it on with a brush, as paint or varnish, no friction or rubbing being requisite to secure the most perfect polish.
Sixth, it dries almost instantly, and, when it has once become dry, ('5 0., the surface it has been used upon,) it may at any time thereafter be freely handled without in the least soiling the hands or garments of the person so handling the same; and when itself soiled by mud or dust or sweat it may be readily cleansed by water or water and soap, when the surface will again appear black and brilliant.
What I claim in this invention is The compounding of the several ingredients hereinbefore named in the proportions named, in the manner pointed out/{and for securing the advantages enumerated.
