Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo W. POWELL WARE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CALENDARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,470, dated J nl y 17, '1866; antedated J une 29, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM POWELL WARE, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Calendars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure lis a face view of said calendar, and Fig. 2 is .a section through the center of the same.
Similar marks of reference denote the saine parts.
Calendars and movable almanacs have heretofore been made with the days of the month arranged in seven columns, and to these the days ofthe week have been applied, either permanentl y or movablyhso that in the latter case the movable indicator of the days of the week can be placed in such a position relative to said seven columns that the days of the month are all exhibited in the column allotted to the day of the week on which they occur.
rEhe nature of my said invention consists in a dial containing the days of the month and an opening, in combination with a central movable dial containing the days of the week or their initial letters, and with a dial containing the months ofthe year or their abbreviations, placed behind the irst-named dial and movable, so that the desired month only can be seen through said openin g. Thereby the month and the days of the month and week are denoted and determined by inspection.
In the drawings, a is a dial containing the days of the week or their initial letters. b is a dial containing seven radiating columns, in which are contained the days of the month in regular order. The dial a, being in the center of these radiating columns, will point out the day of the week upon which any day of the month occurs when once placed. It will, however, generally require adjusting monthly.
LIn the dial b is an opening, and c is a third dial containing the months of the year or their abbreviations, and this is attached at the center by the same screw or rivet that holds the dial a, andcit is to be moved around progressively as one month succeeds another.
The calendar may be suspended by the loop f.
I employ a back, d, when the calendar is made of metal, and I remark that when constructed of sheet metal, about halt' the size shown, it becomes a very convenient pocket' calendar of about the size of a quarter-dollar. I however do not limit myself as to size ofthe calendar or material of which it is made.
When formed of a small size, as before mentioned, this calendar becomes an article that can be worn 011 the guard-chain of the watch or as a badge, being always at hand for use, and forming an ornament to the person; and with this in View the back d may be orna- Inented with any desired design.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The dial b, containing the days of the month in seven radiating columns, the dial a, denoting the days of the Week, and the dial c, indicating the months, and visible through an opening in the dial b, when constructed and arranged in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
In witness whereofl have hereunto set my signature this 26th day of September, 1865.
W. POWELL WARE. Witnesses:
LEI/IUEL W.. SERRELL,
Unas. H. SMITH.
