Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFErcE.
GUSTAVUS BODE, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVED MEDICAL COMPOUND.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,234, dated June 5, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that 1, GUSTAVUS BoDE, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Medical Compound; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and make'use of the same.
My invention consists in a compound of iron, (in a magnetic state,) copper, brass, an ber, and horn, which ingredients when pulverized and mixed together constitute an electric magnetic agent, and the compound is designed to be applied to a belt, pad, or the like for the cure of rheumatism, neuralgia, and other nervous diseases.
I have found the following proportions of the ingredients specified to answer a good purpose: iron, (in a magnetic state,) twenty-four parts 5 copper, four parts; brass, four parts; amber, two parts horn, two parts.
The several ingredients are separately powdered, or made fine in some way, and mixed together.
As rheumatic diseases are not local in their character, but liable to attack any organ of the body, it becomes necessary, in order to make this applicable to each and every case, to put it up in the various forms of cuffs, necklets, cushions, bandages, belts, pads, shoesoles, gloves, 850., in such a manner as will most closely fit the parts affected.
When different metals are brought in contact with one another an electric current is generated. Amber shavings, as well as horn,
become electric on being warmed. The natural heat of the human body is sufficient to generate in these an electric current.
I mix the brass, copper, amber, and horn, and add to these iron in a magnetic state, and thus obtain an electromagnetic current. The efiects of this current as a medical agent are similar to those resulting from the electric current generated by machines now so generally and successfully used in the cure of rheumatism, neuralgia, and kindred diseases; but I think that this current, in consequence of the mode in which I apply it, is far more effective and beneficial for the same purpose, and has none of the disagreeable and painful effects often produced by the use of the electro-maguetic machine.
In the form in which I apply it it is diffused over a very large surface, and, being slowly generated by the warmth of the human body, is mild but constant in its action, as its use may be continued for any length of time without injury and many beneficial results obtained.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A medical compound of the ingredients herein specified and in about the proportions named, intended as a remedy for rheumatism, neuralgia, and other nervous diseases.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 16th dayof April, 1866.
' GUSTAVUS BODE.
