Description

H. BLACK.
Machine for Scut'ching Flax.
No. 55,232.- Patented June 5, 1866.
Iv' 1 F I N PETERS, Pholaplilhogrlw ur, Walhingwn. D. C,
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY BLACK, OF LEWISBURG, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR SCUTCHING FLAX.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,232. datfid J n ,1
To all whom it may coacern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BLACK, of Lewisburg, in the county of Preble and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Machine for Scutching Flax; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
The machine consists of two sills five feet long laid parallel with each other, two feet apart from outside to outside, and connected together'as shown in the drawings. Into these two sills are inserted two upright posts three feet and three inches high, which support the reel. This reel is three feet and six inches in diameter, upon the arms of which are fastened by screws four swords, which scutch the flax by striking it transversely on the flax-board as they are revolved by means of a treadle. The flax-board is movable by means of a spring under the coupler.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of machine, in which- A is the platform. B is the treadle-board.
O is the treadle. 1) is the pitman-shaft; E, the upright .posts which support the reel. F is the reel shaft. G is the scutching-board; H, the upright supporting the board; I, the swords, which, coming in contact transversely with the flax held on the scutching-board Gr, perform the operation of scutching. L is the coupler coupling the upright H, supporting the flax-board, to the reel-posts. Underneath the coupler L is a coil-spring, which keeps the flax-board in proper position for the swords to operate against.
Fig. 2 is a perpendicular view of the machine, lettered and described as a-foresaid.
- What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The use of a reel with swords attached, which operate transversely upon the flax upon a movable scutching-bonrd.
The reel, with the swords and the movable scutching-board, all being my own invention, they are all for which claim a patent.
- HENRY BLACK.
