Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEE-ICE.
F. NV. FLAGG, OF MIDDLETWN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND E. B. MANNING, OF SAME PLACE.
WHIRLING-JACK FOR ToYs.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,766, dated June 19, 1866.
To all whom it may concer/a:
Be it known that I, F. W. FLAGG, ot Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State ot' Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Vhirling-Jacks for Toy Tops; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a t'uli, clear, and exact description ot' the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a side view; Fig.2, alongitudinal vertical central section and in Fig. 3 an in terior View, showing the mechanism ot the whirling-jack.
My invention relates to an improvement in the instrument used for whirling toy tops; and it consists in the employment ot' a cord to be pulled, combined with a self-winding apparatus, instead of a spring-jack, heretofore used.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my improvement, l will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the acconuianying drawings.
A is the case inclosing the mechanism B, the barrel, having its bearings in the upper and lower sides ot' the case, as seen in Fig. 2, and to which the cord C is attached and wound thereon by the action of acoil-spring, D. (See Fig. 2; also denotedin red, Fig. 3.) This said spring is attached to the case and the barrel, so that as the cord is drawn from the case the spring is wound up, and when the cord is released the reaction of the spring rewinds the cord upon the barrel.
E is a spindle having its bearings in the upper and lower plate of the case, and is caused to revolve by a toothed wheel, a, ou the barrel, working into a correspondin gl y-toothed wheel, l), on the spindle. (See Figs. 2 and 3.) The lower end ofthe spindle E is constructed so as to be attached to the top and at the same time to release the top at the proper time.
To whirl a top with my improved jack, place the spindle E into Nor onto the spindle ot' the top, according toits construction; then, l1olding` the barrel in one hand, with the other quickly draw the cord from the barrel, which gives the top a rapid whirl as it leaves the jack. Lettinggo thecord,thecoil-springonthe barrel rewinds the cord ready for a second operation.
By the arrangement ot' the spindle E and barrel B, with their respective gears, a much more rapid Whirl is given to the top than could be done were the top attached directly to the barrel and thespindle dispensed with; yet my invention does not require the presence of the spindle, as the barrel B may project through the lower plate, so as to form a spindle in one and the same piece. Therefore, without conining myself to the use ot' the spindle separate from the barrel- Vhat- I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
The combination ot the spring D with the barrel and spindle ot` a whirling-jack, when constructed and arranged to operate in the manner herein described, so as to rewind the cord, as specified.
