IMPROVEMENT IN BIELT-CLASPS.l

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, I. N. PLorrTs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Buckle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilledin the artto make and use the'same, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of my invention, taken in the line w m, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a front or face view of the same; Fig. 3, a face view of a modification of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention is designed as an improvement over the ordinary buckles, which are provided with tongues, and is more especially adapted for garments-such, for instance, as the waistbands of ladies skirts, gents pants, vests, Stealthough it may be applied to other purposes-for instance, ladies belts, 85e.

The object of the invention is not only to avoid the use of the tongue which perforates the strap or band passing through the buckle and soon injures it or weakens it so that it is liable to break, but also to obtain a buckle which may be more readily applied and will admit of the strap or band being tightened up and loosened with greater facility than usual and still be incapable of slipping.

A represents a metal plate, which may be of rectangular form, and is slightly curved or bent transversely, as shown in Fig. 1. This plate A has its edges at its sides bent backward, as shown at a a, Fig. 1, to form projecting lips at the rear or concave side of the plate, as clearly shown in Fig. l, and the plate is perforated with three vertical parallel slots, b b' b, of a length and width sufficient to admit of the band or strap B passing through them.

The two ends c c of the band or strap are fitted in the slots of the plate A by passing them through the central slot, b', from the inner side of the plate and then passing them through the slots b b from the outer side of the plate and drawing them through, so that they will overlap sufficiently the main portion of the band or strap. By this means it will be seen that when the band or strap is subjected to any tension that the lips a a will press or bear against the double or lapped ends of the band or strap and securely7 hold the same, a firm bite or hold being attained, and even if the band or strap be loose it will not slip in the plate, as the friction produced by the weight of the latter will be sufficient to prevent the ends of the band or strap from slipping in it, and still by pulling on either of the ends of the band or strap the latter will be tightened or drawn up and held firmly in position.

I would remark that it would be perhaps preferable to have the plate A curved transversely, as shown and described, but it is not absolutely necessary; and I would further remark that the arrangement herein shown is a duplex one-that is to say, both ends of the band or strap B may be drawn up or tightened, but one of the ends may be secured in the plate. '-I prefer, however, the duplex arrangement, as in that case the device may be applied to the band or strap in a moment of timefand Without the aid of stitehin g or securing either end of the band or strap to the plate or buckle.

The device, it will be seen, cannot get ont of order or repair, for there are no working or pivoted parts Whatever, a distinction peculiar to this invention.

In Fig.3 the simple arrangement is shownthat is to say, one end of the band or strap is permanently secured to the plate and the other end left adjustable. This modification resembles some forms of the ordinary ladies beltbuckle; but on inspection it will be seen that my improvement differs in respect to the bite or hold which is obtained by the lip Without the intervention of hooks, tongues, or any other extraneous appliance whatever.

Havingthus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as an improved article of manufacture- The buckle-plate A a b, made substantially as herein shown and described.
