Description

UNITED STATES HOMER W. KNOWLTON, OF SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED SNAP-HOOK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,720, dated October E31, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMEE W. KNoWLToN, ot' Saratoga Springs, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Snap-Hook for Harnesses and for other Purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in vthe art to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specication.
lhisinveniion relates toa new and improved snap-hooktbrharnesses andiorotherpurposes; and it consists in constructing the hook outot' a single piece of wire, and in such a manner as to form a very simple, strong, and durable hook, suitable for all purposes to which said hooks are generally applied.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is aside View oi my invention; Fig. 2, an edge View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
I construct my improved snap-hook by taking a piece of wire, of a suitable thickness and length, and bending it at about its center to form one or more convolutions, A, with the sides B B' extending out from them a certain distance parallel with each other, as shown clearlyin Fig. 1. One of these sides, B,is bent, as shown at a, to form a loop or guide, which forms an oblique angle with the main part of B, and the other side, B, is bent or curved obliquely with its main part to pass through said guide a, and after passing through a is bent to form a hook, b, which is shown clearly in Fig. 2. The otherside, B,just beyond the guide a, is bent or curved in such amanner as to pass through au eye, c, at the end ofthe hook b, and form a lock for said hook. rlhe convolutions A serve a twofold purpose-one as a spring, which has a tendency to keep the outer end of the side B in the eye c, and the other as a ring in which to secure a slr-ap, O.
1t will be seen that any pull or strain to which the strap may be subjected will not have a tendency to pull the end of B out ot the eye c, but will, if'anything, have a contrary effect.
In order to disengage. the end of B from the eye, the two sides B B are pressed toward each other.
' Thus it will be seen thata ring, l),or a loop when fitted in the hook b cannot become casilall y detached.
The device is exceedingly strong, may be cheaply constructed, and in a very ornamental manner, or so as to have a chaste and neat appearance.
I would remark that the guide a may be formed on either of the sides B or B.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The snap-hook herein described, the saine being composed ot' a single piece of wire and formed with the convolution A and checkloop a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
HOMER W. KNOWLTON.
