IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,298, dated August 8, 1865.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB POST, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey,have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

The present invention consists in the use of a series oftu mblers placed within the sides of the turning part or cylinder, and so arranged therein as to be adjusted by the turning movement of the key, so as to pass through the bridges ofthe lock when desired to withdraw the lock bolt or latch, they being retracted or thrown back to their original positions when the key is removed from the lock by means of a series of bent or other suitable springs.

To one side of the lock-box, and projecting therefrom, is a hollow tube or casing, d (1, made of sufficient length to extend through any of the ordinary thicknesses of materials used for house doors and other similar purposes, both ends of which are open, and the outer end, f, has a lip or edge, 9, entirely around the same.

At the lower opening of the tube, and either formed with the inner surface of the exterior plate of the lock to which the tube is secured, as before described, or attached thereto at points diametrically opposite to each other, are two bridges, s .9, having grooves tt, corresponding to the number of tumblers upon each side of the turning cylinder, in and througlfwhich grooves the right-angular portions of the tumblers move as the turning cylinder in which they are arranged is turned by the keyo, inserted within the opening or slot 2 of the same, the key being of the proper shape to move the tumblers sufficiently to bring their angular ends in position to move through the grooves of the bridges, as described, when the dog 0/, upon the lower end of the cylinder, striking against the lug 11 upon the bolt-latch, moves it in the proper direction to disengage or unlook it from the door, as is evident without further description.

By withdrawing the key from the tube of the lock the tumblers are retracted or thrown back by the force of the springs on which they rest, and into proper position for unlocking the latch again, the latch being thrown back as described in the other application hereinbefore particularly referred to.
