Specification .forming part of Let-ters Patent No. 472,773,` dated May 16,1865.A
.To @ZZ whom 11b-may concern: 4
Be it' known that I, CHAnLEs R. Oris, of Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a' new and useful Iniproveinontin Steaui-Hoisting Appa- --ratusg and I do hereby declare that the fol-A g lowing is affull, clear, and exact. description of the saine, reference. being had to the accom- "panying drawings, forming apart of ,this specification, in whichi iV Figure 1 is a'sideelevation of the engine and nain drum of a steam-,hoisting apparatus,
with my invention applied. Fig. 2 is a front Fig. .3 is a transverse section of thestopping and revcrsiugdevice in the plane indicatedby theline .r afixiFigJ;
Similar letters of reference indicate" corresponding parts in both figures.
The object`of this invention is toeffect the automatic stoppage of the engine of a hoisting apparatus 'on the arriva-1 of the platform at the top or bottom of the hoistway or at any given point inlthe heightthereof, either in the ascent or descent, or on the hoisting-drum having madea given number of'revolutions in either direction; and it consists in a novel and very simple devicev whereby this result is4 effected.
To enable others to make and applymy in-p vention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.V
A A represent the cylinders of a double .engine used for driving the main druni B of the hoisting apparatus by a belt from a pulley Von Vthe crank-shaftC. D is a steam-chest, "common to both cylinders, and containing a valve of any known or suitable kind by which 'steam may be shut from the engine or admitted in such manner as `to produce the revolution of the crank-shaft in either direction, according as it may be desired to raise orlo wer the platform or load. 'E is the lever for'work-- ing the said valve (showni n Fig. 2) in three positions, the middle position bein gthat in which' right guide, H, attached to the framing of the i enginaaud-which gears with a pinion, a, on a horizontal shaft, b, which works in fixed bearings attached to thesaid framing. This'shaft l is geared at its upper end by a pair of bevel- ;gears, 'c' df, with a shaft, e, which works in a, fixed bearingyld, attached tothe engine-iraniingl and a bearing at e in one ofthe standards I, which contains the bearings of the hoisting-` drum.` The said shaft has upon its lower part a clutch-box, J, of cylindrical or other form,
which is fitted to turn freely upon it, but prevented from movingl lengthwise ofthe said shaft;` and this el-utch-boxis geared bya pair of bevel-gears, g g', with the shaft .h of the `main druni B of the hoisting apparatus. The p ortion of the shaftc within theM clutch-box J has a screw-thread, i, on its exterior. At the bottom4 of this screw-thread thereis firmly secured to the said shaft one piece, j, cfa clutch, and on the upper part of the said thread there is firmly secured to the said shaft one piece, k, of another clutch. `Between the clutch-pieces j and'kl there is fitted to turn on the screw-- thread t a double clutch-piece, L, on the lower surface of which there is a tooth, j', to engage L has on oneside a pin, l, which enters 'and iits to slide easily within alongitudinal groove, m, or straight guide in the clutch-box .L -and fcoinpels the said clutch-piece Lto turn with the clutch-box while permitting it to move lengthwise of the shaft C upon the screwthread t.
`The operation is as follows: During the hoist- I ing operation, when the drum B rotates in the direction of the arrow shown near it in Fig. 1, the bevel-gear g", acting upon the bevel-gear g, turns the clutch-box and `clutch-piece L' in y v the direction 4of the arrow shown upon the latter, and the said clutch-piece is caused to niove Vupward upon the screw-threadvl on the shaft a to depress the rack G and lever E.
,pressed to thelowest position shown in Fig. 2
tionary until the tooth j ofthe clutch-piece when the said shaft is caused to rotate with by the operator pulling a cord connected with a pulley, s, en the shaft b, and thereby reversingtheengine. Theclutch-boxandclutchpiece L then turn in the opposite' direction to that irstdescribed, the shaft c remaining sta- L is brought by the downward movement of the said piece upon thel screw-thread linto contact with the tooth on the clutch-piecej,
the clutch-box, and so, by means of the gearll ing d c a., to raise the rack G and the valve# lever, and bring the latter tothe` middle position to close vthe valve and stop the hoistingdrum. When the en gine'is to be started'again for hoisting, the operator pnllsthe cord attached to the pulley S, and sobrings the valve lever to 'the highest position. f.
v The elut'ohpieces j k L should. have their teeth so constructed as to permit j and k to turnnearly a whole revolution independently of L in order to permit the shaft c to turn. in; A
dependently of the clutch-box when the shaft Z1 is turned by pulling the cord attached to the pulley s, to start the engine. driving the clutch-box, may be arranged upon any other rotatin gsha't't or counter-shaft ofthe hoisting' apparatus instead of upon the shaft of the main drum. Y
The clutch-piecesj and 7c vmay bel adjustable upon' thev screw-thread to produce the stoppage ot' the hoisting-p1atform at any height in its ascent or descent, or to producethe stoppage of the drum after any number of revolutions..
Instead of the clutch-box being geared with the hoisting apparatus, and the screw-shaft o being geared with the valve, the' clutch-box might be geared with the valve and the screwshaft'with the hoisting apparatus.
' What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi Combining the vstop-valve. of the 'engine of a steam hoisting apparatus with the shaft h of the main'drum, or'with any other shaft or countir-shaftof'the hoisting apparatus, by means of a stop-motion';constructed, applied, and operating substantially as herein specified. l CEAS. It. UTIS..
