Description

- UNITED STATES @PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,006, dated September 22, 1863.
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CALVIN C. ALEXAN- DER, of Denver, in the county of Arapahoe, Territory of Colorado, have invented a new and useful pump for the use of steam tireengines, and engines of all kinds, mines, stone-quarries, cisterns, oilwells, &c., requiring less motive power than any now in use; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
I claim that the nature of my invention consists in the combination of four cylinders, (more or 1ess,) A A AA, att-ached to a reservoir, B, by means of four pipes, (more or less,) C C C C, moving from cylinder-heads K K K K, to cheek-valve seats E E E E, the valves D and F on the inside cylinder-head, G, which allows the piston-head H to pass the whole length of cylinder A, the piston-rods M M M M, connected to cranks J JJ J, working in rotation at right angles on shaft J, by pitmans N N N N. The water is drawn through pipes L and valve D into cylinder A and discharged at the same end through valve F and pipe C, check-valve E, into reservoir B, and through pipe O.
The arrangement is so ordered as that the valves and the inside cylinder-head allow the piston-head to pass the whole length of the cylinder, the piston-rod being connected to the crank, on a shaft, by a pitman, which CALVIN C. ALEXANDER.l
