Be it known that I, WILLIAM ZET'ILE, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have in vented a new and useful Stopper for Preserve- .lars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification.

The object of thisinvention is the provision of a cheap, simple, and effective device for hermetically closing the mouths of jars and cans.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of ajar furnished with my improvement. Fig. 2 shows the clamp detached. Fig. 3 is an aXial section of the jar-top. Figs. 4 and 5 are top views of the cover, showing, respectively, the unlocked and locked conditions of the clamp.

A is a jar having a projecting rim, B. C is a cover of glass or other suitable material. D is a gasket, which, being pressed between the jar and cover, acts to close the joint. E

I is a central boss on the top of the cover. F are two inclined planes leading from opposite sides of the cover gradually up to the level of the central boss. G are studs projecting from the inclined planes F. His aclamp consisting of an arched middle portion, I, with a central crimp, i, and two vertical portions, J, having inward and upturned lips j.

Operation The gasket and cover being I placed in position, the clamp is pushed sidewise onto the j ar-t0p, with its crimp '6 over the lug G. The ends of the middle portion, I, are

then depressed, so as to allow the claws j to slide along easily under the rim B until the clamp is brought to its central position. (See Figs. 1, 3, and 4.) The next and concluding manipulation is to lock the clamp, so as to prevent its accidental dislodgment. This is accomplished by rotating the clamp H through about ten degrees, so as to bring the uncrimped portion opposite the studs G. (See Fig. 5.)

I claim herein as new and of my invention- 1. The combination of cover 0, having the boss E, inclined planes F, and studs G, with the binding and locking clamp H I t Jj, for

application to a rimmed jar or like vessel in the manner set forth.

2. The construction of the cover 0, with wedge-shaped projections F F, in combination with the clamp Hand the neck of thejar, as shown and described.
