Description
lUNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE..
GEORGE w. E. GEDNEY, OE NEW YOEK, N. Y.
AER-GUN.
. Specification forming part Of Letters Patent No. 33,34, dated September 24, 1861.
Z0 cull whom, t may (2r/naamw Be it known that I, GEORGE W. B. GEDNEY, of the city Of New York, in the county of New York and State Of New York. have invented a new and useful Improvement in Air-Gnns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same7 reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section. longitudinal section of the valve.
Attached to the breech of the barrel of the piece A, Fig. l, and beneathit, is a short tube, b, parallel with the barrel and communicating with it by Opening at C. Behind the opening in the short tube b is a valve-seat and valve, d. The valve is attached to a small rod, E, passing through the cap on the front end of the short tube b, and has a button on the front end for the purpose of pressing it into its seat by the iingers. The back end of the short tube b is Fig. 2 is turned down, forming a bend similar to the handle of a pistol, to which is attached a hollow india-rubber handle, of any shape to t the hand Or suit the fancy, and which maybe compressed either by the hand or by some mechanical device. At f is placed a pin in the bore of the barrel, to prevent anything from closing the opening C.
Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of the-valve d and rod with button. The valve d is made of cork (or any other suitable material-such as india-rubber or metal) and fastened to the end ofthe valve-rod either by screw or Otherwise, and when pressed into its seat is retained there by its Own adhesion until the pressure of the air behind it becomes great enough to drive it out.
The Operation of' the gun is as follows: Put the finger on the button of the rod and press the valve lightly into its seat. to the muzzle of the barrel the article to be projected. Grasp the india-rubber handle, and compress it tightly. The compressed air will force the valve forward, and, having no other way of escape, will pass up through the Opening C and drive anything out Of the barrel that has been put into it.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of the parts as herein described.
2. Thevalve, made as herein described and acting by its Own adhesion.
3. The bag or pouch, made from india-rub ber, gutta-percha, or any flexible air-tight material, for Jthe purpose of projecting light articles or metal shot and to be compressed either by the hand or otherwise7 as is herein fully described and set forth.
G. W. B. GEDNEY.
