Description
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
A. W. MORSE, OF EATON, NEYV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND R. V. ROBIE,` OF SAME PLACE.
BED-BOTTOM.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,064, dated February 22, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. IV. MORSE, of Eaton, Madison county, State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing and Tightening Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved bed bottom.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment or use of the devices hereinafter described whereby a bed bottom may be tightened lengthwise and crosswise simultaneously.
My said bed bottom as shown in the drawing hereunto annexed, is composed of the following parts, viz: rods B B; gear wheels A A; wires C; ratchet roller D; pawl E; lever F; staples Gr G G2 and pins H; all of which is placed within the frame of the bedstead. The construction and operation is as follows: The rods B B on the ends of which are gear wheels A, A, working into each other, and held in their relative position by staples G G and pins H; wires O are connected to rods B and B by staples G2 and also to the frame of the bedstead in the same manner. Bod B is pierced with holes for lever F, by moving said lever and thereby rotating rod B motion is communicated to rod B" through gear wheels A A, pawl E works into ratchet roller D thereby retaining the wires at their proper tension.
The advantages and utility of this arrangement consists, first in its cheapness;
second in the facility with which it can be tightened; third the bottom can be taken out instantly; fourth it can be used without injury tothe outside of the frame.
Having set forth the construction and operation of my improved bed bottom, what I claim as my invention and des-ire to secure by Letters Patent is- Tlie combination and arrangement of the rods B, gear wheels A, staples G, pins H, wires C, or their equivalents, lever F, ratchetroller D, pawl E, for the purpose of giving the proper tension lengthwise and sidewise simultaneously, substantially as set forth.
The above specification of my improvementsV in bed bottoms signed and witnessed this 20th day of January 1859.
A. IV. MORSE.
Titnesses LEVI MILES, GEO. SPENCER.
