Description

' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL XV. TYLER, OF .GREENVVIOH, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
To alt whom `it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. TYLER, of Greenwich, in the county of Washington and State of New York, have invented certainv new and useful Improvements in Harvesting-Machines; and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication.
Figure l is a top view of my improved liarvesting-machine; Fig. 2, a rear elevation of said machine; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 4, a vertical section-in the line y y of Fig. l; Fig. 5, a section in the line .fr of Fig. 1; and Figs. 6, 7, 8, and 9 are views of detached portions of said machine.
Similar letters indicate like vparts in each drawing.
The respective movements of my improved harvesting-machine are combined with an oblong rectangular frame, which may be composed of the side beams, s s', the end beams,
t t', and the central transverse beam, f, properly united to each other.
The rear end of the frame of said machine rests upon the wheels D D', and the front end i ot' said frame is supported by the pilot-wheel B. The bearing-wheels D D' are placed on the axle F, and the pilot-wheel B is pivoted within the houndj, which is connected to the frontend of the frame of the machine by means -of the linchpin l.
The finger-bar b is jointed to the vertically-adjustable head -piece a, which works within suitable guiding-brackets, o o, secured to the side s ofthe frame of the machine. The
cam-lever m, which is jointed to the said head- A center'ot' the axle F, and has a zigzag groove formed in its periphery, which enables it to impart motion to the cutter-blade by means of the pendnlous lever e and the pitman g, as represented in Fig. 5. The pendulous lever c is jointed to the standard d, which rises from its connection with the central beam, f, ofthe frame of the machine.
The foot of the standard d fits into a groove whose sides are formed by the cheeks p p, which are bolted to the aforesaid beam f, and the said foot of the standard d is also jointed .to the horizontal lever h, which is placed immediately in front of the cross-beamf, and is jointed to a projetion from said beam, as represented in Fig. 1.
A pivot projecting from the pendulous le- -ver e carries a roller, o, which tits into the zigzag groove in the actuating-wheel A, and thereby enables motion to be imparted to said lever. i i
By taking hold of the lever h, or by pressing against it by the feet of thel driver, the standard d may at a moments notice be moved forward a sufticient distance to throw the cutter blade ont of gear with the actuatingwheel.
By elevating' the inner end of the finger-bar b by means ot' its jointed head-piece a, operated by the cam-lever m, and then disconnecting the pendulons lever e from the actuating- Wheel, the finger-bar may be thrown into a vertical position for the purpose of enabling the machine to be more readily transported i will entirely overcome the said lateral strain exerted by the finger-bar and cause the machine to run with perfect steadiness.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The sliding head-piecea, to which the in- The above specification 'of my improvement ner end ofthe finger-bar is hinged, in eombiin harvesting-machines signed this 14th day nation with the levers h and m, the movable of November, 18,57.
standard d, the pendulous lever e, and driving- SAML. W. TYLER. Wheel A, when the said parts are arranged for Witnesses: v joint operation in the manner and for the pur- Z. C. RQBBINS,
