Description
C. BEACH.
=H arveste r Cutter.
Nd. 19,-904.- r 1 Patented April 13,1858.
CHAS. BEACH, or PENN YAN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN REAPING AND MOWlNG MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 19,904, dated April 13, 1858.
To all whom it may concern v Be it known that I, CHARLES BEACH, of
Penn Yan, in the county of Yates and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mowers and Reapers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of 'the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of the separator and cutters. Fig. 2 is a birds-eye view of the separator, finger-bar, and cutters.
The letters of reference refer to like partsin each figure.
A, Figs. 1 and 2, represents the main portion of the separator. It may be made of wood or metal. It is to be attached to the fingerbar at the end toward the standing grain or grass, and serves as a support for the cutters O and D and the meansfor operating the same. No particular form or shape is required. The
form represented in the figure is best adapted to all kinds of work.
Bis a wheel at'the rear end of the separator. On its axle is a crank that drives the connection E.
U is a cutter, made in shape as represented in Fig. 1. Its shape may be changed when it is to be driven by any other means than the wheel B and connection E. It may be driven by a shaft placed in the rear of the cutter-bar and extending through the separator, with a.
crank on the end, as represented by the dotted linesin Fig. 1. This cutter has acutting-edge at the upper and lower edge, the lower edge to out with a downward motion by the aid of the cutter I). The upper cutting-edge cuts when rising that which it gets under while it is down. These edges keep a continuous cutting of whatwonld otherwise obstruct a machine in going through the grass, thereby destroying the'resistan'ce at this point, and reducing thev side draft of any machine to which it is applied.
D is a cutter, made as represented in Fig. 1. It is attached to the upper edge of the part A at the forward and sloping part at any angle required, and is secured to the part A.
G is a guard-finger bar. It is made of a bar of iron, and is made to receive and supportthe guard-lingers, also the separator which is attached to the outer end.
What I claim as my invention, and desire. to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the. cutters O and D with the separator of a harvesting-machine, when arranged and operated as and for the purpose herein set forth.
CHARLES BEACH.
