Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEq DANIEL TAYLOR, OF OARBONDALE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR 'I`O HIMSELF AND II. A. CHAMBERS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MANUFACTURE 0F JOURNAL-BOXES FOR SHAFTING, c.
peeitication forming part of Letters Patent No. [7.706. dated June 30, 1557.
To ttZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL TAYLOR, of Carbondale, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or pro duced a new manufacture in the shape of a journal-.box or section of a journal-box having a brass inner surface united to an iron box by first casting the former ot' the proper shape, and then casting the latter upon the said brass liningsurface; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompav nying drawings, making a part of this specification.
Figure lis atop view ofthe lower (or upper) half of my new journal-box; Fig. 2, an end view of the same, and Fig. 3 a transverse section.
Similar letters indicate like parts in each of said drawings. y
The brass inner surface of my improved journal-box should be of such a thickness that it will not be entirely fused when the melted iron is poured upon itto form the body ofthe box. The said brass portion of the journalbox I shall generally cast with lianges at each end, and also with any desirable number of outwardly-radiating lugs to be inelosed within and partially fused by the said iron portion of the box. The fusion of the surface of the brass when tlie melted iron is run upon it will of itself cause a solid and perfect union between the two metals when the iron hardens within the mold. A journal-box thus construeted has all the good qualities of a journal-box made entirely of brass, and it can be sold for one-fourth the price of the brass journal-box.
My new journal-box is equally as durable as a journal-box made entirely of brass, for the reason that when the latter is worn away an amount equal to the liningsurfaee of the former it will .be rendered unfit for service and will have to be sold as old metal.
W'hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as a new commodity or article of manufacture, is-
A journal-box or section of a journal-box composed of a brass lining and an iron body, when the two are solidly united together by casting the latter upon the former, substantially as herein set forth.
The above specification of my new and im proved journal-box signed and witnessed this 24th day of February, 1857.
DANIEL TAYLOR.
