Description

UNITE fili SATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL D. QUIMBY, OF WINCHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO EDWARD A. LOCKE.
FRAME FOR TRAVELINGBAGS AND MAIL-POUCI-IES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,900, dated May 13, 1856.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL D. QUIMBY, of Vinchester, in the county of Middlesex and Sta-te of Massachusetts, have invented, an Improvement in Mouth Frames for Travelers Bags, or other Articles of Like Description; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l, exhibits a top View of one of my improved mouth frames for a carpet bag or travelers night sack, the said frame being represented as entirely open. Fig. 2 is a side view of it exhibiting it as closed. Fig. 1s an end view of it in a closed state. Fig. 4, is a transverse section of it. Fig. 5, shows an end view of a bag constructed with such a frame and represented as open.
The mouth frames of ordinary bags for travelers consist of two iron frames, or bent bars hinged together so that when they are opened apart, they form in appearance, one rectangular frame. From the manner in which they are made and applied to t-he sac-lr or bag, a difficulty often exists in opening them to an extent sufficient to introduce a large article into the mouth of the bagthe said mouth being more or less contracted with reference to its entire width.
In carrying out my invention, I arrange between each of the two folding side frames, what I term hinge extenders and gore closers, the lateral frames being hinged or jointed to said parts and arranged with reference to them in the manner I shall now proceed to describe.
In Figs. l, 2, 3, and 4, A and B, are the lateral frames or bent bars to which the bag is to be fastened at its mouth and to which the lock of the bar is generally ixed. These frames are hinged to opposite sides of two triangular or approximately triangular gore closers and hinge extenders, plates or frames, C, D, arranged with reference to the lateral frames, A, B, as shown in the drawings; the bag being also fastened to such gore pieces. The positions of the joints or hinges of the lateral frames and gore pieces are shown at, a, a, a, in the drawings. The gore pieces may be made solid, or as open frames, in which lat-ter case, they should be covered with .leather or other suitable material made to extend entirely across them. They not only serve to extend the hinges of the mouth frame apart from one another, but also to project into or close the opening between the frames, when they are brought together. And furthermore, they enable the bag to be opened to a greater extent, than it could be, were the lateral frames directly hinged together without such intermediate frames or gore pieces.
A travelers bag constructed with one of my improved mouth frames will be found4 much more convenient for either the reception of large articles or the removal of the same therefrom, than a bag made with a frame of the ordinary kind.
What I claim as my invention is the improved mouth frame or combination of two folding side frames, A, B, and two hinge extenders and gore closers C, D arranged, connected, and made to operate together substantially in manner and for the purpose, as stated.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature this twenty eighth day of March A. D. 1856.
S. D. QUIMBY.
