IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-ARMS.
,specification ioi'iiiiii'g part of Letters Patent No. l 3,0?, l, dated December 1S, 1(135.
To all whom it may concern.:
13e it known that l1, Josiiiii C. DAY, of Hackettstown, in the county of \\'arren and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Arms, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference beingr had to the annexed drawings, in which- Figiire 1 is a side view of the gun; Fig. 2, alongitudinal section through stock and barrel; Fig. 3, a plan view; Fig, et, a side view of the rear portion of the barrel; Fig. 5, a planvicw ofthe saine; Fig. (3, a transverse section in line 1 1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 7, an end View of the rear end of the barrel; Fig. 8, a longitudinal section through the gun, showing -the barrel in position to receive lthe charge; Fig. .9, a perspective view -oi' the trigger ,worliing the loose'collar l), Fig. 1l), an elevation ofthe lock, the hammer being at full-cock; Fig. 1l, a longitudinal sectionA of the ea] i-1`eediiig tube, Fig. 12, a transverse section olf the same, Fig. 13, a perspective view of the follower s,- Fig. 1J., an end View of the loose collar D, Fig. 15, a top view of the saine; Fig. 1li, aniodified forni ofthe shank of the loose collar 1l); Fig. 17,' a perspective View of this modified form with the trigger a. inserted; Fig. 1S, :i iiiodii'ied way of locking the barrel; Fig. iti, :i section ol a ball before the explosion ol' lthe powder has affected it; Fig. 2U, a section of the same after the explosion. l A
My invention relates, iirst, to a manner of arranging the two side 'pieces between which the barrel is liiiii different from that described in niy former `.i-ttersliiteiit; second, 4to a different construction of the sliding collar which holds the barrel in its position when the gun is to be discharged.
'lo enable those skilled in t-he art to make and use iiiy invention, l will proceed to describe its construct-ion and operation.
thang the barrel A, ip the saine manner as described iii my Letters l?ateiili, between two side pieces, laiid l?. i3 is east together with a malleable cast -iron ease, l, which forms 'the noch of the stock, and B2 is jointed to ll by hinge l. rEhe side piece ll".is provided with a projection l at its rear end, which is made to fit closely iii a corresponding recess in Gasen. A Screw, ai, 'fasteiis it firmly to this l ease. By this arrangement I am enabled to shown in Fig'. 18.
remove th'e barrel with the least loss of time by unserewiiig screw c and turning over side piece l-l'l.
The sliding collar l),wliich serves to tix the rear end of the barrel to thebreech (l and to close the lioiiit, instead of providing it with two knobs, as specified in my 'former Letters latent, I arrange with a stem, l), and a trigger, a, which straddles in the shape of `a fork over this stein and catches iii the-two notches 1) D3. A spring, I), is placed so as to press against this trigger c, whose fulcrum is in a cavity, a', of the ease 13, and Aforces thereby the sliding collar D up to the rear end of the barrel. rlhe stationary breech G, upon which collar l) rides, is made round, and the face of it in the shape ot' an are, as specified 'in my former Letters latent, but there is a groove, C,tiiriied out ol' its siirface, which leaves only a narrow cylindrical place at the edge of the 1 breech C for the sliding collar D to ride upon.
rlhe projecting piece A of the iear end ofthe barrel A is made similar to this breech. It is `left cylindrical for a short distance atits edge,
and provided -with a groove, A2. rlhese grooves Gand A, I nialc for the purpose of providing a place where the fouling may 'collect, and to decrease the surface upon which the sliding collar D moves, thereby lessening the friction and securing a free and easy niotion of the sliding collar.l The face of this collar is made on the same sweep as the rear end of the barrel A, and its outer edge sharp, so as to present a cutting-edge to the rear of the barrel A. 1f, then, the cartridge is inserted in the chamber A'2 and barrel forced back to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2,I the edge of the collar will cut off the rear end of the cartridge, and thereby open a passage into the powder, which operation lis clearly shown iii Fig. S. l
A modified plan of locking the barrel is The barrel A ishung be-l tween tl ie sides in the saine manner; but the rear end ol" the barrel, instead of being in the shape of an are, is made straight, not square with the sides, but. somewhat inclined, and the face of the breechof a corresponding inclination; or it may be made` of circular forni similar tothe first arrangement, so that both l'orin a tight joint when the barrel is brought down.. The inclination of the joint must be l hinge, B3, and locking them by the projection of such an angle that the lower corners of the` barrel in loeing` raised would clear the breech, but not larger. A knife, u, inserted into a recess in the top of the breech with a spring, @,behind it would perform the shearing operation to remove the rear end of the cartridge. A triggenVV, of hook-like shape, catches in a notch at Ythe lower side of the barrel and holds the barrel locked.
"What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, in addition to my former claims, is-
l. Connecting the two side pieces, B and 1, between which the barrel is hung, by a B", and a corresponding recess, substantially as set forth.
2. Making the faceof the sliding collar D of the shape of an arc, with a ycutting-edge, so as to act in combination with the rear endv of the barrel as shears for the purpose of removing the rear end of the cartridge, as described. 3. The groove C and A2 in the breech vand the rear end of the barrel, for the purpose set forth. e JOSEPH. G. DAY. Vitnesscs:
