N.PETERS, FHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAS. PARSONS, OF DUBLIN, INDIANA.
WAGON.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,503, dated August 28, 1855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES PARSONS, of Dublin, in the county of Vayne and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement on lVa-gons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 an end view.
A A represent in Fig. 1 the side pieces or ways resting upon the elevating blocks 00, 02 near the outer end of bolster C; F F, the cast arch and wrought axletree combined; see Fig. 2; H H, supporting braces with oblong bands 6 e; D D D D, elevating blocks upon the side pieces or ways; f f, notches in the hind elevating blocks D D for the brace bands e e to drop into; 0 0, notches on the underside of hind blocks for the arch to rise into; 8 s, ears on opposite side of hind blocks to regulate their lateral motion; 2' z -i z, adjusting or toggle pins to hind blocks; Gr G, ratchet wheels; L L, the shafts of ratchet wheels for winding and unwinding chains, see Fig. 2, in loading and unloading; K, the bar or lever to apply in winding, &c.
The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar adaptation of my wagon in its changeable character in the wide position of the side pieces or ways, and the sliding manner in which they pass through the brace bands 6 e and the open mortises or slots 0 0 in the castings of the arch; also in the open mortises or slots 0 0 of the arch, and in the form and uses of the oblong brace bands e e in holding in their proper place and giving the sliding motion to the hind elevating blocks D D; also in the peculiar adaptation of the hind elevating blocks D D in the coupling operation, thereby rendering it eX- tremely convenient, for long or short work in loading and unloading and hauling, every variety of loading and hauling which such wagons are capable of performing.
I am aware however that arches, singly and combined, and ways or couplings, also braces and elevating blocks resembling mine but differently arranged have been used in wagons, for similar purposes, but still, such resemblance without the width and the sliding principle as in mine form no part of my invention, but it is in their peculiar application as hereinafter substantially set forth and described or their equivalents either in form or material.
Having thus described the nature and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. I claim the arrangement of the side pieces or ways A A resting upon the elevating blocks n 17, near the outer end of bolster C, thereby gaining a greater width between them than is obtained in other wagons constructed for similar purposes, thus giving space for loading if raised on a plank or platform, to raise partly above and between them if necessary to clear the ground in hauling, also the manner of their forming the connection between the forward and hind wheels, by passing or sliding through the brace bands 6 e and the mortises or slots 0 0 of the arch as hereinafter described.
2. I claim in the structure of cast arch with the open mortises, or slots 0 0 and their uses, that when the arch F F and wrought axletree combined as represented in Fig. 2 when supported by the hind wheels, the mortises or slots 0 0 will be brought nearly or quite in a horizontal position for the reception of the side pieces or ways as before described, thus serving the purposes of coupling the wagon long or short, to suit circumstances.
3. I claim the peculiar adaptation of the oblong bands 6 e of the braces H H through which the side pieces or ways slide and the hind elevating blocks D D pass, and the blocks being held in their proper position by the bands e e dropping into the notches f f of elevating blocks D D, thus giving them the sliding motion upon, the side pieces or ways, and the side pieces or ways are permitted to slide freely through them and under the blocks; and from thence they form a connection with the cast arch and wrought axletree by a stirrup firmly binding them together.
4. I also claim the manner of so arranging the hind elevating blocks D D as to give them the sliding principle as previously described, and the ears 8 s on opposite sides, 0 0 being notched into the elevating blocks, thus rendering them adjustable in coupling as at 0 0 described and shown. the Wa on lon or short means of the steady 5r toggle? lpinsz'z'z'zianii again by their JAMES PARSONS '5 holding in connection With the braces, the Witnesses:
arch, in a perpendicular position, by the up- AQUILLA BARRETT, per part of the casting of mortises or slots JOHN WI-IIPPO.
