Abstract

The laser beam ablatable film of the invention includes an ablatable metallic layer arranged below a translucent protective layer that is dyed through-out. The metallic layer is connected to a contrastive colored layer by a transparent connecting layer, and the contrastive colored layer is connected to a plastic film. The entire assemblage of laminated layers can also include a self-adhesive film applied to the plastic film and the self-adhesive layer is then covered by a removable carrier material. This laminated assembly can be stamped into individual labels that can be detached from the carrier material and placed onto objects. When the ablatable foil of the invention is subjected to a laser beam surface areas of the laminated assembly appear as a mixture of colors of letters or symbols resulting from the color filter effect of the protective film.

Description

The present invention relates to a film which can be inscribed with a laser beam.

In the following, labeling is to be understood to mean graphic symbols and signs of any kind. The protective layer can be, for example, a plastic film, a protective lacquer layer or the like.

A film of this type is known from international publication W098 / 16397. The medium of the known film which can be changed by the laser beam has, under a metallic layer which can be ablated by the laser beam, a contrast-forming layer with a coloring which differs from the color of the metallic layer. "Ablating" means the removal or destruction of a layer, which loses its opacity.

If areas of the surface in the form of letters or graphic symbols are ablated from the metallic layer by laser action, these characters can be recognized in the color of the contrast-forming layer through the protective layer, while the areas which have not been ablated remain visible in the color of the metallization. The laser action takes place from the side of the protective layer through the protective film.

However, the use of writable films of the type disclosed in WO98 / 16397 in terms of color appearance remains limited, provided that the manufacturing effort is to be justified: the ablated areas appear through the protective layer in the color of the contrast layer, which is not ablated areas in the color of the metallization. The metallizations usually used are essentially black or silver-white metallizations. The possible colors are white or multicolored lettering with a black background or black or multicolored lettering with a silver-white background. Different colored metallizations are in principle conceivable, but the available colors, especially if one takes into account the price of some "colorful" metals or their application as a thin layer, will always be limited to a small number. Simple colored printing of the protective layer is usually ruled out, since laser-labeled foils are primarily used where there is no need to use printed foils for reasons of resistance to abrasion or fading.

The invention is therefore based on the object of providing a film which can be labeled with a laser beam and which offers a great deal of color design freedom with little technical outlay. In addition, the positive properties of conventional laser-inscribable films should be retained. This means that when labeling with the laser beam, practically no health-endangering and environmentally harmful emissions are to be produced, and the fully labeled labels, type plates, etc. are intended to offer great intrinsic protection of the typeface against chemical and mechanical loads, i.e., among other things, good resistance to abrasion and Bleach.

The object is achieved by a film which can be labeled with a laser beam and which has at least one colored, translucent protective layer which is permeable to the laser beam and on the underside of which a medium which can be changed by the laser beam is arranged and which has at least two opaque layers which can be ablated by the laser beam and at least one has a contrast-forming layer resistant to the laser beam, wherein at least one of the protective layers that are largely transparent to the laser beam is colored through. The color impression of the layers visible through the protective layer is thus influenced by the color of the protective layer. For example, the non-ablated portion of a silver-white metallization appears gold-colored due to a yellow-colored protective layer.

Between the layers that can be ablated by the laser beam there is a translucent, i.e. arranged for the laser beam transparent and transparent, colored layer. This leads to the fact that with the same film, different colored inscriptions can be realized in sections, whereby the font color can only be varied during the inscription process itself, depending on whether one, several or all superimposed ablatable layers are removed at a certain point ,

It has turned out to be advantageous to carry out at least one of the opaque layers, which can be ablated by the laser beam, mainly metallic. The metallizations can be deposited or sputtered onto translucent foils, for example. The metallic layers are preferably aluminum layers.

In a further embodiment of the invention, at least one of the ablatable layers contains metal oxides, non-stoichiometric metal oxides and mixtures of metals and metal oxides also being able to be present.

In a further development of the present invention, the contrast-forming layer comprises several areas of different colors.

In a particularly preferred embodiment of the present invention, the medium which can be changed by the laser beam has a self-adhesive layer on its underside, as a result of which the labeled film can be attached to a base in a simple manner. The film is preferably previously adhesive-repellent coated carrier web is arranged, from which the film can be removed before application to the base.

In a further advantageous embodiment, the protective layer is provided on its upper side with an adhesive layer, which makes it suitable for rear glass applications, for example in rear-view windows.

Additional adjustments to the visual effect of the present invention can be achieved by at least partially printing or varnishing the protective layer.

In a particularly preferred development of the present invention, the film has punched holes, which subdivides the film into individual surface areas, for example individual identification labels, type plates or badges. The resulting surface areas can then advantageously be removed and, for example, mechanically applied to objects to be marked.

In a further advantageous embodiment of the present invention, the film can be attached to a base and has additional security punchings which make unauthorized detachment of the film from the base impossible without at least partially destroying the film.

In a further embodiment of the present invention, the film is divided into individual, at least partially detachable surface areas by the action of a laser beam.

The invention is explained in more detail below on the basis of a schematically illustrated exemplary embodiment. The figure is intended to illustrate the layer structure of an embodiment according to the invention, the dimensions not being shown to scale. It shows:
Figure 2:
is a schematic sectional drawing of a film according to the invention with two ablatable layers.

Die durchgefärbte transluzente Schicht 6 besteht zweckmäßigerweise aus Kunststoff, die zweite ablatierbare Schicht 4 aus Metall.FIG. 2 shows a section, not to scale, perpendicular to the layer structure of an exemplary embodiment of the present invention. Below the Translucent, solid-colored protective layer 2 has an ablatable metallic layer 3 which is connected via a transparent insulating layer 13 to a solid-colored translucent layer 6, on the underside of which a second ablatable layer 4 is arranged. The solid colored translucent layer 6 expediently consists of plastic, the second ablatable layer 4 of metal.

The second ablatable layer 4 is connected via a transparent connecting layer 9 to the contrast-forming color layer 5, which is applied to a plastic film 10. The protective layer 2 is advantageously also made of plastic. On its underside, the plastic film 10 has a self-adhesive layer 7, which is covered on the side opposite the plastic film with a carrier material 8, for example part of a continuous web. The backing material 8 is adhesive-repellent by appropriate treatment, for example siliconization, so that the laser-inscribable film can be pulled off the backing material 8 and stuck onto another base. If the film laminate was first cut or punched into individual labels, plaques, signs, etc., these labels, plaques, signs, etc. can be detached individually from the carrier material 8 and can simply be stuck onto a wide variety of objects.

With the aid of a laser beam 1 b, 1 c, for example from an electronically tracked YAG laser, areas or areas 11 a, 11 b of the metallic layer 3 that represent letters or graphic characters can be selected by appropriate selection of the power and the exposure time of the laser beam 1 b, 1 c be ablated so that the second ablatable layer 4 is not ablated. The ablated areas 11 a, 11 b appear in a color that results from the color of the metallization 4 with the color filter effect of the protective layer 2 and the translucent layer 6. The non-ablated areas appear in a color that results from the color of the metallization 3 with the color filter effect of the protective layer 2.

With the help of the laser beam 1 a, 1 d of the electronically tracked YAG laser, areas or areas 12a, 12b of the metallic layers 3 and 4 which represent letters or graphic characters and overlap in pairs can also be ablated if the power and exposure time of the laser beam 1 a, 1d is set accordingly, or the laser beam 1 a, 1d twice over the corresponding Areas 12a, 1 2b is performed. The areas 1 2a, 1 2b then appear in a mixed color, which is created by the color filter effect of the protective layer 2 and the translucent layer 6 from the color of the contrasting layer 5. If the protective layer 2 and the translucent layer 6 are lightened, sufficiently transparent, the color impression of a dark colored contrast layer 5 is influenced only slightly or not at all.

In the case of a yellow-colored protective layer 2, a translucent layer 6 colored in light cyan, silver-white metallizations 3, 4 and a black contrast layer 5, green-metallic-colored and black characters with a gold-colored background result. In the case of a protective layer 2 colored through in light cyan, a translucent layer 6 colored through yellow, silver-white metallizations 3, 4 and a black contrast layer 5, green-metallic-colored and black characters with a cyan-metallic-colored background result.
