This is a critical parameter when we are dealing with near-field readings, since no unique definition of this point has reached an agreement in the literature.

An iterative total least squares‐based estimation method for structural damage identification of 3D frame structures
Structural Control and Health Monitoring, 2020
Identifying structural damage can usually be modeled as a problem with the use of linear equation... more Identifying structural damage can usually be modeled as a problem with the use of linear equations. Due to measurement noise and spatial incompleteness of the measured mode shapes, these linear equations are usually ill conditioned, which will significantly reduce the accuracy of subsequent damage assessment. This study develops an iterative total least squares (TLS) based estimation method, which can effectively mitigate such ill conditioning and avoid propagating noise into estimates of structural damage severity. In particular, a procedure, called the δ–p curve method, is proposed to choose the effective rank of a TLS estimation. Further, an iterative approach of TLS‐based estimation is proposed to eliminate spurious damage estimates due to modal expansion and measurement noise. To investigate the effectiveness of the proposed iterative TLS‐based estimation method, detailed numerical studies of damage assessment are first conducted on a simulated 3D frame structure, in which both noise pollution and spatial incompleteness of the mode shapes are considered. Additionally, experimental tests with a laboratory structure are performed to validate the proposed method. Results indicate that the proposed iterative TLS‐based method can accurately identify the structural damage, even with noise‐polluted and spatially incomplete modes.

Thus, CCS in combination with EOR will provide economical value from incremental oil recovery besides providing source for CO2 sequestration. Given a fixed CO2 supply to be distributed to different reservoirs, it is necessary to develop an allocation model to maximize profit from EOR operations. In this study, a discrete-time optimization model is developed subject to scheduling, capacity and flow rate constraints. A case study is presented to illustrate the model.

Fuzzy optimization of multi-period carbon capture and storage systems with parametric uncertainties
Process Safety and Environmental Protection, 2014
Abstract Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is an important technology option for reducing industri... more Abstract Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is an important technology option for reducing industrial greenhouse gas emissions. In practice, CO2 sources are easy to characterize, while the estimation of relevant properties of storage sites, such as capacity and injection rate limit (i.e., injectivity), is subject to considerable uncertainty. Such uncertainties need to be accounted for in planning CCS deployment on a large scale for effective use of available storage sites. In particular, the uncertainty introduces technical risks that may result from overestimating the limits of given storage sites. In this work, a fuzzy mixed integer linear program (FMILP) is developed for multi-period CCS systems, accounting for the technical risk arising from uncertainties in estimates of sink parameters, while still attaining satisfactory CO2 emissions reduction. In the model, sources are assumed to have precisely known CO2 flow rates and operating lives, while geological sinks are characterized with imprecise fuzzy capacity and injectivity data. Three case studies are then presented to illustrate the model. Results of these examples illustrate the tradeoff inherent in planning CCS systems under parametric uncertainty.

The objective of this trial is to evaluate quetiapine for insomnia in nonpsychotic PD patients. Fourteen consecutive PD patients with frequent insomnia and without psychotic symptoms were treated openly for 12 weeks with a single evening dose of quetiapine. The dose was adjusted according to clinical improvement and tolerance. The severity of insomnia was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), daytime sleepiness was evaluated with the Epworth Sleep Scale (ESS), and motor performance was evaluated using the motor section of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). All evaluations were done before and 1, 2, and 3 months after initiation of treatment. Total PSQI basal scores were 13.6 6 3.7 points. The PSQI score improved in 11 patients and was reduced by 3.8 6 3.9 points by the end of the study (P , 0.01). The ESS score was reduced by 4.3 6 3.7 points (P , 0.01). The mean quetiapine dose was 31.9 mg/day. No significant change was observed in the motor scale. Two patients were discontinued due to nonserious adverse effects. These results suggest that quetiapine may be a safe and effective treatment of insomnia in PD patients. Doubleblind studies will probably confirm these findings.

Disturbing passages describe the primitive (indeed, all but nonexistent) safety and environmental standards at these facilities, and the high casualty rates among the researchers and workers. The legacy of these two facilities persists in heavily populated sectors of northwest Washington; indeed, as Vilensky points out, extremely high arsenic levels are common on American University property, and, even in 2001, prompted the relocating of the childcare center. Once lewisite showed promise as a weapon, facilities for its production were established outside Cleveland, in Willoughby, Ohio. The CWS was so enthusiastic about the prospects for lewisite that it quickly readied the Willoughby facility (an abandoned auto factory) under the supervision of James Bryant Conant, a professor of chemistry who would later go on to become the president of Harvard University, and deeply involved in the development of the atomic bomb. But the war ended just as the facility was ready to swing into fullscale wartime production. Only the first five chapters of the book concern themselves directly with the history of gas weapons in World War I. Vilensky goes on to examine the interwar history of lewisite, and BAL, the history of chemical weapons in World War II, and the serious environmental problems raised by lewisite and other chemical weapons in U.S. and international arsenals. He includes an examination of the sea dumping (off the U.S. coast) of tens of thousands of tons of lewisite, and an overview of lewisite production outside the United States. This interesting, eclectic book will appeal especially to those who study the history of science and environmental history.
