WICKED: ONE WONDERFUL NIGHT

There's a strange exhilaration In such total detestation It's so pure, so strong Though I do admit it came on fast Still I do believe that it can last

i hate how the musical plays nessa's death off for a joke because it kind of undersells just how important it was to elphaba's crash out. because elphaba spent most of her life believing she was responsible for her mother's death and that she had a responsibility to look after her sister, and if anything bad happened to her, she would be blamed. fast forward to their meeting in act ii and elphaba's in a place where she can't support nessa anymore and can't do anything else for her. she's done everything she can for nessa, it hasn't been enough, and nothing ever will be. and as much as she still loves nessa and this completely breaks nessa emotionally, elphie finally finds some freedom from the toxic family structure she grew up in. then nessa gets crushed by a fucking house. because elphaba wasn't there to stop it. because elphaba stopped looking after her. because elphaba decided to be selfish and put herself over her baby sister (she was quite literally hooking up with fiyero at that moment lmao). and suddenly every horrible thing frex said and believed about her might actually be true, because nessa is dead just like their mom is dead and it's elphaba's fault

i've noticed this thing when i talk to casual fans abt wicked, especially straight women, where they're like "ugh, i couldn't stand ariana's character at the beginning of the movie" and their dislike of glinda seems to be rooted in that. but i don't get that at all because that's the point??? she's supposed to be fucking annoying for the first hour. it's a very common trope for the romantic lead to be fucking annoying at first. pride and prejudice, arguably one of the most famous romances ever, is literally about how the romantic lead is fucking annoying and a massive dick and that's why elizabeth rejects him at first. obviously, glinda isn't explicitly the romantic lead, but she is elphaba's co-lead and fills the exact same role--the only differences being that they're both women and don't actually kiss on the lips (and don't come at me with that fiyero shit cuz that man is jacob twilight at best). my point is she fills the exact same role as every sexy romantic lead under the sun, but because the musical frames itself as a platonic love story (which... sure jan) ppl can't seem to wrap their heads around the fact that we're supposed to root for gelphie and their relationship and we're supposed to root for glinda's growth, rather than framing her as "the real villain." like obviously you can interpret media however you want or get smth different out of it than the authors intended but i think the responses are interesting cuz they reflect wider dismissiveness about women's relationships with each other and platonic love

so when gelphie reunites post canon we all agree glinda's gonna tackle elphie and they're gonna fall to the ground like a married couple reuniting from war

I wish the wicked books or musical cared more about nessarose especially because I sense Marissa bode (who has the spirit of a tumblrina) would have some great headcanons for her if they gave her anything at all to do. Her feeling like she has to protect her family by being the only one who acts normal but that’s not fully possible ever for her. Also her in the books becoming a kind of youth pastor to disguise certain tics from her disability and being really into fashion despite her dad being ostensibly broke. And her being extremely good at public speaking and diplomacy despite being homeschooled and every single other living member of her family being essentially incapable of reading social cues of any kind. And her only real friends are her autistic green sister, her green sister’s autistic homoerotically codependent friend, and a 50+ year old family retainer. She’s a star to me

I do not think there will be gelphie in part 2 I think they’ll be like we fought over a man but our platonic friendship and sisterhood with each other is more important to us than that! and cast interviews will be of this sentiment and then there will be articles that are like The feminism of wicked part 2 and then Ariana grande will share an instagram post that’s like What does she see in that pile of straw anyway…

being completely honest the tonal dissonance with the catfight & nessarose's death has always bothered me...i had hopes that the movie would present it differently but they seem to be approaching it the same way :// in general, the lack of focus on the relationship between elphaba and nessarose in favor of developing fiyero and elphaba is maddening

elphaba didn't even try to push her away as one would do in a fight, she literally went and grabbed glinda's waist...
