Just got tsitp in from the library at last so it's time to Endure once again
Interesting how much less sympathetic they made Jeremiah in the show. The fact that he knew about Susannah's cancer in the book low-key took out some tension and also made Conrad's behaviour make a lot less sense. Weirdly paced with some threads that just sorta trailed off. I didn't believe in caring about any of the characters. Weird tension in the Susannah-Belly-Laurel dynamic that I don't have the energy to dissect.
Carmy is such a good character like, he calls everyone ‘chef’ as a show of respect, he genuine listens to the staff, he praises the team when they make something really delicious — the complete opposite of the harsh environment he experienced in NYC — and whenever he is an asshole he apologizes and takes accountability for it like… I know the bar is on the floor for male leads but it’s just so refreshing. He has all the makings of an edgy anti-hero asshole but simply isn’t.
The tricky thing about having a linguistics degree is that an unexpectedly high proportion of people you meet in your everyday life like to think of themselves as amateur linguists.
