#KeepKateJewish letter project!
You may have seen the #KeepKateJewish hashtag around here and on Twitter the past month or so. Created by @itschelsearoth, it is a call to CW executives to make sure this aspect of Kate Kane’s character is not ignored or glossed over when she arrives on TV. It’s a worthy undertaking that any fan of Kate’s should be able to support, whether they can personally relate to that aspect of her or not.
At the same time, I think it could also use a little extra boost.
Before anything, I need to give credit where it’s due. This whole idea is inspired by Ross Scott’s letter campaign directed at Electronic Arts (which is detailed in this video from 20:20 to 29:55). The circumstances there are completely different, but the layout is pretty similar. Also, thanks to @itschelsearoth , @figsandnewtons , and @progmanx for their assistance in workshopping the form letter, which I’ll get to in a second. There is another contributor who would prefer to remain anonymous who helped in getting the required business address; thank you to them as well.
Now. Some rules.
1. This is NOT about the casting. I don’t care if you hate it, love it, or fall somewhere in the middle. It’s done and would be at least an order of magnitude more difficult of a thing to change anyway. The one thing all sides of this seem to want is for Kate herself, as a character, to remain Jewish. That’s the point here.
2. Do NOT harass or dox anyone involved in this. Not the executives, not the writers, not the actors. No one.
Don’t spam their email or Twitter. Do not send anything to their personal addresses; don’t even seek them out. I hate that I have to make that clear, but I’m making it clear. Don’t be a jerk.
The most “heinous” goal of this project is simply to flood the relevant people in charge with polite, professional letters asking for Kate’s Jewishness to be respected in her adaptation. Nothing more. Be on your absolute best behavior.
Okay. So what’s the plan?
As stated in rule 2, the idea here is to send physical letters to the business addresses of Greg Berlanti, Caroline Dries, and Geoff Johns that encourage them to respect the fact of Kate’s Jewishness in the way she is written, including the hiring of Jewish writers, and “ideally a queer Jewish woman who can understand” Kate’s “unique experience” (to quote the form letter).
These three people are, at least to the best of my knowledge, the ones who will have the most direct control over how Kate will be portrayed, so it’s important to get their attention.
Why physical letters? As Scott put it in the above video, “you are easier to ignore online.” Digital petitions are hard to gain traction. Emails can have filters set up to block certain keywords. Twitter is easy to go dark on. Etc.
I highly doubt that there is any actual maliciousness on the part of any of these people. But the point is, if they did want to ignore online pleas for whatever reason, they completely and easily could.
But potentially hundreds of daily letters on their desk, all politely but firmly asking for the same thing? That’s harder to brush aside, and also shows an extra level of commitment.
So, if you’re in on this and promise to keep a cool head, here’s how you can help:
Form letters. These are links to PDFs of form letters addressed to each of the key people:
Just print out, sign your name at the bottom, and send it off in a properly addressed (including your return address) and stamped envelope. Send as many of these as you can or feel comfortable sending, just keep it to a max of one per day per addressee.
Personal letters. A similar idea. If you think a more personal letter is better suited to you, go for it! All the above rules still apply. I recommend staying close to the message of the form letter, but relating personal anecdotes of why this is an important thing to you, and for them to get right, could be a big plus. Just keep your letter professional in tone and to a max of one page. 12-point Times or Arial, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, all that.
Share this. If you can’t send a letter for any reason at all, that’s okay! Sharing this post will still help.
Keep up with the hashtag. Again, the same rules apply. Be polite, consistent, and not spammy.
This was long, so thank you for reading, and doubly so if you decide to help out!
This only works if a lot of letters are sent. Please send as many as you can!
Cons are starting up again, so now is the time to start asking this question in person to the relevant people (Berlanti and Dries, most likely). Bring it up at Q&As, or in interviews if you have that sort of access. Politely, as always.
It can be this simple (feel free to suggest better phrasing):
"Kate Kane’s Jewishness is an integral part of her character. Can we expect to see that handled with the complexity and seriousness it deserves? And if so, how?“
Polite, but also puts them on the spot a little. 😈
Feeling all sentimental about she coming back… at least for awhile…
