Cybercrime – our response

We support global law enforcement to respond to key cyber threats.

We work to disrupt cybercriminal activities and serve as a voice for law enforcement in international forums. Our strategy focuses on reducing the global impact of cybercrime and protecting communities.

We do this by coordinating international law enforcement efforts, providing operational support, and enhancing global cybersecurity through partnerships and capacity building.

What types of cybercrime does INTERPOL focus on?

We focus on key threats such as ransomware, malware attacks, online scams, and business email compromise. Our focus evolves as cybercriminals adopt new tactics, but we generally concentrate on cybercrimes that affect many individuals or organizations globally.

How does INTERPOL help member countries to address cyber threats?

We help by sharing threat intelligence, providing expert guidance, organizing training sessions, and coordinating cross-border operations. We help law enforcement agencies improve their response to cybercrime through capacity-building projects; in person and online training programmes, workshops, tabletop exercises, and sharing of resources.

Our Cyber Fusion Centre is a central hub for gathering, analyzing, and sharing cyber threat intelligence. The actionable intelligence provided by the Centre supports law enforcement in making informed decisions to disrupt cybercriminal activities globally.

INTERPOL helps member countries to identify, triage and coordinate the response to cyberthreats.

Can individuals report cybercrime directly to INTERPOL?

No, individuals cannot report cybercrime directly to INTERPOL. Instead, they should report incidents to their local law enforcement agencies. If international coordination is needed, these agencies will collaborate with INTERPOL to address the case.

Why are public-private partnerships important in the fight against cybercrime?

Cyber threats often affect the public and private sectors, making collaboration essential to combat them effectively. Private sector partners, such as technology companies, financial institutions, and cybersecurity experts, have access to key information that can help law enforcement connect the dots globally without compromising ongoing operations.

Working closely with member countries and private sector partners helps detect, assess, and respond to evolving cyber threats quickly and effectively.

Through initiatives like the Gateway Project, a framework where INTERPOL builds trusted channels for leveraging actionable intelligence, we address both ongoing and emerging threats. This partnership bridges the gap between law enforcement and industry, ensuring a coordinated, global response to evolving cyber threats.

Our cybercrime operations

These cases illustrate the scale, diversity, and real-world impact of our cybercrime operations.

Cybercrime knows no borders - and neither do we. INTERPOL works with countries and trusted partners around the world to take down online threats, disrupt criminal networks, and protect people from digital harm. From malware attacks such as ransomware, to online scams, phishing, and business email compromise schemes, we respond with speed, strategy, and global coordination.

We coordinate or support operations across our member countries to dismantle cybercrime groups. These operations are fueled by global collaboration and data-driven action.

Cracking down on global scam networks

Between late 2024 and early 2025, INTERPOL led a major operation across seven African countries to dismantle online fraud rings. Over 300 people were arrested for running scams through fake investment platforms, mobile apps, and messaging services.

In Nigeria, authorities uncovered a scheme involving foreign nationals tricked or trafficked into running scams in multiple languages. In Rwanda, police shut down a network impersonating telecom staff and injured relatives to steal bank details. These actions helped recover over USD 100,000 and protect potential victims.

Stopping banking malware in its tracks

In Brazil, INTERPOL supported the takedown of the Grandoreiro malware - a banking trojan that had been stealing from people across Spanish-speaking countries since 2017. The malware spread through fake emails, mimicking trusted companies. Once on a device, it recorded keystrokes and triggered fake popups to steal logins and drain bank accounts.

Five key suspects were arrested. The group is believed to have stolen over USD 3.7 million, with attempted fraud reaching far higher.

This case demonstrates the importance of joint technical and investigative support between law enforcement and private sector cybersecurity experts.

Taking on cybercrime at scale across Africa

In another major joint operation, INTERPOL worked with 19 African countries to disrupt cybercrime operations ranging from ransomware to online scams. Over 1,000 suspects were arrested, 134,000 malicious online infrastructures taken down, and financial losses of nearly USD 200 million uncovered.

In Kenya, police exposed a fraud network that stole USD 8.6 million through hacked credit card data. In Cameroon, victims trafficked into scam centers were rescued after being forced to target unsuspecting victims through cyber fraud. These actions not only disrupted crime – they safeguarded lives.

These coordinated actions reinforce INTERPOL’s growing cybercrime capabilities across Africa, empowering local agencies with tools and intelligence to respond swiftly and independently in future cases.

Behind every action: Global partnership

None of this happens alone. INTERPOL connects law enforcement, trusted private sector experts, and other frontline responders to bridge the gap between intelligence and enforcement. By sharing intelligence, building stronger defenses, and respond quickly to evolving threats we transform information into investigative actions. Together, we’re making the digital world safer for everyone. Want to partner with us? Learn how: https://www.interpol.int/Crimes/Cybercrime/Public-private-partnerships
