💥The #Europeana2025 conference is so energizing! 🗣️The program is rich and compelling, making space for real conversations about real issues: #AI and responsible reuse, barriers to the #publicdomain, funding the #commons, addressing cybersecurity, and much more. 💛There’s also a great sense of #community and it’s been wonderful to catch up with old friends and make new ones based on our common ambition to build an open European #dataspace for heritage that is values-aligned and serves its purpose of preserving, protecting and enabling #reuse of heritage. 💫The panel I was on with the brilliant Maria Drabczyk Sebastian Majstorovic Marie-Véronique Leroi and Karol Zgódka was an amazing opportunity to share updates on the Creative Commons Signals and our TAROCH Coalition. 🌍 I’m honored to be speaking at the international conference “Botticelli vs. Warhol: Art, Law, and the Circulation of Cultural Images”, 🎨taking place in Florence on June 12–13, 2025 at Villa Ruspoli. 🎙️ My talk — “How much? Cultural heritage between free uses and licensing” — will focus on the urgent need to open up access to cultural heritage while respecting legal and ethical frameworks. Drawing from the Creative Commons TAROCH – Towards a Recommendation in Open Cultural Heritage initiative, I will explore how public institutions can rethink licensing models and embrace openness without losing control or value. This is a timely discussion, especially in Italy, where fee-based models and copyright restrictions often hinder the free reuse of heritage content. Last week, several members of the TAROCH Coalition took part in the 2025 Encuentro GLAM Cono Sur, hosted at the Facultad de Información y Comunicación at the Universidad de la República in Uruguay. The gathering offered a powerful space to reflect on how regional priorities can inform and strengthen global frameworks, like those championed by TAROCH. Throughout the conversations, the importance of Creative Commons licenses emerged as a key enabler of equitable access and cross-border reuse of cultural heritage. The event was organized by Wikimedistas de Uruguay and the Centro de Fotografia de Montevideo and supported by Wikimedia Chile, Wikimedia Argentina, and the . TAROCH members and representatives in attendance included Evelin Heidel, Patricia Diaz Rubio, Biblioteca Nacional Aruba (Peter Scholing), GLAM E-lab (Andrea Wallace), and Creative Commons (Dee Harris).

What an incredible week in Montevideo for the GLAM Cono Sur Meeting! I was so thrilled to join Andrea Wallace and Peter Scholing on the panel Global Perspectives on Open Access, sharing more about Creative Commons’ work and learning from such inspiring colleagues. Huge thanks to Wikimedistas de Uruguay and Centro de Fotografia de Montevideo for hosting such a thoughtful, energizing event. One key takeaway. There’s growing momentum across Latin America around open access and cultural heritage grounded in equity, local context, and action. The conversations here made it clear that TAROCH Coalition’s work towards a global framework is not just timely, it’s essential. Local advocacy and global policy need to work together to truly open up culture in ways that matter for our futures. Can’t wait to see where we go from here!
