Universal Access to All Knowledge
About us
The Internet Archive, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, we provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, people with print disabilities, and the general public. We serve millions of people each day and are one of the top 300 web sites in the world. We are funded through donations, grants, and by providing web archiving and book digitization services for our partners. Our mission is to provide Universal Access to All Knowledge. We began in 1996 by archiving the Internet itself, a medium that was just beginning to grow in use. Today our archive contains: 735 billion web pages 41 million books and texts 14.7 million audio recordings (including 240,000 live concerts) 8.4 million videos (including 2.4 million Television News programs) 4.4 million images 890,000 software programs You can find information about our projects on our blog at https://blog.archive.org/

Aruba’s Slavery Documents Registered in UNESCO’s International Memory of the World (MoW) Register The Aruba National Committee for UNESCO’s Memory of the World Program (MoW-AW) is proud to announce that documents related to slavery in Aruba have been officially registered in UNESCO’s Memory of the World International Register. The decision was made during the meeting of UNESCO’s Executive Board in Paris on the 10th of April, 2025. The documents in question are part of the collections of the National Archives of Aruba (ANA) and the National Library of Aruba (BNA), and they provide clarity on the lives of enslaved people and their descendants in Aruba. With this registration, Aruba’s documents are now officially part of the existing entry titled “Documentary heritage of the enslaved people of the Dutch Caribbean and their descendants (1816–1969)”, which already included contributions from Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Suriname, and the Netherlands. Curaçao has also made new additions to the existing entry, which were likewise registered. The nomination was prepared through collaboration between MoW-AW, UNESCO Aruba, ANA and BNA. This registration acknowledges the unique and international value of Aruba’s slavery-related documents as an important source for understanding our colonial past and its influence on the present. For MoW-AW, this marks a historic achievement. This international recognition gives voice to the many people who suffered during the period of slavery and helps strengthen our identity as a people. Moreover, the registration in this international register promotes ongoing preservation, digitization, and accessibility of historical documents, which is already being carried out through the Coleccion Aruba platform. The registered documents are accessible via Coleccion Aruba (Collectie Aruba) or Internet Archive for schools, researchers, and the broader community. MoW-AW is preparing a public celebration to mark this important moment and hopes that in the meantime, this achievement will serve as a point of reflection and encourage dialogue about the legacy of slavery in Aruba. MoW-AW, UNESCO Aruba, ANA, and BNA would like to thank all partners who contributed in one way or another to the nomination, both locally and internationally. A special thank-you and congratulations go to all colleagues at the National Archives and National Library, as well as our colleagues in Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Suriname, and the Netherlands who worked together to make this possible. Internet Archive Responds to Record Labels: Stop Playing “Hide-The-Ball” Yesterday, the Internet Archive submitted its response to the record labels’ recent motion, which seeks to add an additional 493 sound recordings to their lawsuit against the Internet Archive for preserving 78rpm sound recordings. The Internet Archive’s position is clear: the labels have been engaged in a long-running game of “hide-the-ball” and their motion to file a second amended complaint should be denied. Read the full response and explore links that help explain what's at stake in the lawsuit: https://lnkd.in/gN87fGSc

The Internet Archive is SUCH a special place. I was tremendously honored to be invited to speak at Funding the Commons "Infrastructures of Resilience" this last weekend. The event brought together brilliant thinkers and builders like Wendy Hanamura, Samuel J Klein, Danny O'Brien, Tom Kalil, Allison Duettmann, Evan Miyazono, Mark Graham, and SO many others who continue to inspire me to think differently and dream bigger. 💖 HUGE thank you to Beth McCarthy and the team for inviting me. I believe the talks were recorded, so I’ll share back when we get the links! UPDATE: Thanks to Matthew Markovich for finding the recording. My part starts at ~1:36:00, about halfway in the video. My talk is ~10min, but I highly recommend watching the other sessions if you have time! https://lnkd.in/edDGkA73
