Today at #TrustCon, Toby Shulruff presented insights from 63 in-depth interviews with people in the trust and safety ecosystem (mostly T&S practitioners with between 3-33 years of experience!). These interviews were conducted as a part of the larger History of T&S project and represent an incredibly rich dataset across what Toby and her co-authors, Jeff Lazarus and Amanda Menking, identify as three waves of trust and safety. 🌊 If you're at TrustCon and want to learn more, find Toby. If you want to read more, stay tuned; we'll be posting a pre-print soon! 📚 P.S. So much thanks to interviewees for sharing their personal histories in and of T&S. 🙏

New paper coming out! Zoe Phillips Williams and I recently co-authored a book chapter titled "Trust and Safety as Philosophical Practice." 🎉 You can find the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/gMbbJtFB We argue that there are profound similarities between Trust and Safety work and academic philosophy, and that T&S policy professionals regularly engage in philosophical thinking. We also suggest that academic philosophers have much to learn from engaging with T&S professionals. Simply put, this is a plea for bringing philosophy outside the ivory tower and into social media companies. This chapter is part of Trust and Safety Foundation's forthcoming edited volume "Trust, Safety, and the Internet We Share: Multistakeholder Insights" (Taylor & Francis, 2025). Many thanks to Amanda Menking, Maia Levy Daniel for their valuable suggestions and, of course, to Zoe Phillips Williams for her intellectual and philosophical partnership!

“There are a lot of people doing trust and safety, and not enough people talking about trust and safety. And there are also people who talk about trust and safety, who don't really know trust and safety. So, I wish there were more of those people that I know who do trust and safety coming out to talk about it.” Come join us in centering the voices of those who *do* know T&S at TrustCon on Tuesday at 4:10pm in the The History of Trust & Safety: Origins, Evolution, and Future Directions.
