🔶 Google Maps appears to be rolling out a significant quality-of-life improvement for its users, with reports indicating a new feature that displays live travel times to a user's home directly on the app's main screen. This enhancement, observed as a "Home" suggestion chip below the search bar, offers immediate insights into current traffic conditions for the route home. The color-coded travel time, seen in preliminary reports, allows users to quickly assess whether their commute will be longer than usual, informing decisions about initiating full navigation or seeking alternative routes. This development follows earlier updates that introduced ETA displays on the route planner screen. The integration of live travel times onto the home screen chip streamlines the process for millions of daily commuters, providing actionable information without requiring deeper interaction with the app. While currently in a testing phase with limited availability, this feature underscores Google's ongoing commitment to refining user experience and leveraging real-time data to simplify daily routines. It could significantly impact how users manage their time and travel plans, particularly in urban environments where traffic can be unpredictable. #GoogleMaps, #TechUpdate, #Traffic, #Navigation

I wish Google Maps told me which lane to take for that flyover. When I reach the destination the indoor map of the mall is easy. We’ve all wished that. But across Asia, something bigger is playing out. 🍍 People are shifting to superapps maps to for discovery, while superapps are saving API costs by building their own maps. The end goal is to take you from navigation to transaction. 🇸🇬 In SEA→ GrabMaps: 80% POI coverage, powering all its mobility flows. 🇨🇳 China → Amap: much superior to Google, can transact, 360M DAUs, 🇰🇷 Korea → Naver/Kakao: regulatory moat, all-in-one lifestyle maps Prediction Super-app maps will dent Google Maps. they’ll own local discovery and transactions in markets where superapps are strong. Soon, your map won’t just tell you where to go. It’ll close the sale too. Are you observing similar shifts in your city? #shubhamspeaks

At Google, we can spend 20% of our time working on a side project. Because I'm passionate about measuring CO2, I spent 20% of this year working with the Travel Impact Model (TIM) team. The team works on measuring the emissions of flights. This model powers the emissions labeling in Google Flights and several other flight booking platforms through a public API. But what do you do with the measurement? Is 500 kg of CO2 for Paris-New York a lot? Hard to say. That's why I added a "Typical Emissions" function to the TIM API. It returns a weighted median of all flights between two airports so that you can compare. This will allow the conscious travelers of these booking platforms to take a meaningful decision when buying a plane ticket. You can try it out at: https://lnkd.in/efh58QCN Thanks Nona Ebrahimi for the help!
