4 feature recommendations for Google Maps (Google) [1] Safe routes instead of fast routes Currently, Google Maps shows routes by time and distance. Highlighting safe routes (based on parameters such as poorly lit streets, high-accident areas, etc.) can be really helpful. "I may not want to take poorly lit road in the night. Okay with travelling 5 km extra." [2] Create your journey and share with others I, as a user, may want to share the route that I will follow (stops, enroute cities, etc.). This will be particularly useful when traveling to distant/not-so-popular places. If Google Maps can track my route and help me share with others, it can save hassle for people visiting those locations for the first time. [3] Popular places on the route Often, we look for popular food joints or meeting places when people are travelling from different locations. Recommendations around popular meeting points or popular places on the route could be good addition. [4] Identifying dark spots Highlight the spots where internet/mobile reception is nil or weak, and roads are deserted and the likelihood of mishappenings are high. This particular feature can be helpful to improve the road saftey and can also help Police to deploy force accordingly. Some of these aspects can be built based on the crowd-sourced data, following the same principles Maps use right now. What additional features would you want to see in Google Maps? #Google #GoogleMaps #ProductManagers #ProductManagement

For those who know me personally, you know I love playing around with maps and pushing their limits in my free time. Over the past month, I teamed up with my buddy Abhishek to see if we could make maps more useful for end-to-end travel planning. We picked travel because, as avid travelers ourselves, we find the planning part super time-consuming. Think about all the stuff you Google before a trip—Should I drive or fly? Where's the best area to stay? What restaurants or landmarks are within walking distance? Our idea was pretty simple: take the most used mapping tool, Google Maps, and combine it with the magic of #OpenAI to make the map ‘talk’ and help with planning. We shared this half-baked product (if you can even call it that 😁) with friends and family over the holidays, and the feedback was amazing! It’s a free chrome-extension that sits on your desktop #GoogleMaps and helps with any travel-related questions while making it easy to see your places of interest right on the map. As a little New Year’s gift, I wanted to share this tool (Ask Plan GO!) with all of you. The link is in the comments. Hope you find it handy!
