What We Do

The EASS helpline advises and assists individuals on issues relating to equality and human rights, across England, Scotland and Wales.

We are able to support individuals to resolve their issues using informal dispute resolution methods as an alternative to county court or employment tribunal. In some instances we may write to a service provider on behalf of a client in order to initiate a resolution. However, we recognise that there are some situations where issuing a claim may be the only option.

Our Impact on Real Life Incidents

Case 1

Agency Worker Reinstated

The EASS advised the client on possible direct discrimination and discrimination arising from disability. On the advice of the EASS the client appealed the decision to let her go.

Further Education

The client contacted the EASS for advice and was advised on her rights under the Equality Act 2010. The client was advised on the reasonable adjustment duty under the act the duty to make reasonable adjustments.

Leisure Centre

At this point the EASS wrote to the manager of the leisure centre, reiterating what the client would like, and the duties which the leisure centre has, as a service provider.

Pregnancy and Maternity

A caller to the EASS Helpline made a flexible working request while on maternity leave that was declined. She wanted to change her hours to look after her third child. The employer refused the flexible working request which was subsequently refused at an appeal hearing.

Schools no mobile phone policy

A pupil had been off school for a long period of time following a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. He was placed on a pathways to school programme designed to help him smoothly transition back into school life. As part of the programme, the individual has a care plan that the school has to follow.
