We mark the 100th anniversary of Jacques Delors, a visionary who shaped the Europe we know today. His leadership as President of the European Commission from 1985 to 1995 transformed the European project into a dynamic, people centred union, one that balances economic progress with social justice and democratic legitimacy.

Nineteen months after the outbreak of the armed conflict in Gaza — triggered by the terrorist attacks by Hamas on Israel on 7 October 2023 — the humanitarian situation in the Gaza strip remains catastrophic. Civilians continue to be the primary victims, with many Israeli hostages still in captivity. 

The European Economic and Social Committee welcomes the European Commission’s continued commitment to reducing the European Union’s net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040 compared to 1990 levels, as outlined in its proposed amendment to the EU Climate Law. This ambitious target is a crucial step to staying on course for the 55% reduction by 2030, and it is essential to securing a healthier, safer, and more sustainable future for all Europeans.
