Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Fantastic place to stay and enjoy the area. We loved the traditional Japanese room, wearing the Yukatas provided and we used the onsen baths in the evenings after dinner. The food was all amazing (make sure to tell them of there is anything that you don’t eat before you arrive as they will just bring you food with no options on the day). The location is also great with easy walk to the bus/train station.

GermanyI would kindly like to thank the hotel staff for our lovely stay. They went above and beyond to make it an unforgettable experience and even provided a WiFi-repeater for our room. We booked the private onsen twice and can absolutely recommend it. The location is also perfect for visiting the Snow Monkey Forest. Thank you again and we hope to be back soon!

The rooms were clean, traditional and Japanese rooms. The tatami mattresses were super comfortable. Food was exceptional and Saki tasting was a nice addition.

SingaporeHotel Tsubakino is 2.5km away from Shibu Onsen, hard to walk over. But it’s okay to us as we drive.
This hotel is next to the yadanaka station, for those visit there by train is very convenient. Hotel itself located at a very quiet street. Overall we love it I view of comfortable and clean room, well prepared meals. We love the coffee machine at lounge.

AustraliaWe splurged for the private onsen room and it was an absolute treat! The staff were extremely attentive and delightful to be around. Plenty of space with a nice blend of traditional Japanese features and western bed. Two pillows each (seemingly a luxury in Japan!) plus a massage chair and ample toiletries too. Of course the star of the room was the onsen overlooking mountain peaks. What a great way to end those 20000 step days! Highly recommend including dinner and breakfast as well. We had a private dining room for dinner and a breakfast, with different menus every day. PS try the apple juice if it’s available; it’s the best we’ve ever tasted.

United StatesAt the hotel the food is absolutely the most wonderful Japanese food but we booked it for two nights with food and breakfast. I would highly recommend only doing the dinner one night and then having dinner somewhere in town the other night just for a change
The onsen in our spa room was incredible. The breakfast was delicious and the location was perfect. You can take the train there and go see the snow monkeys so easily. The mountain views are incredible

New ZealandStayed on the futon which were very thin so had a sore back.
A traditional hotel, with very traditional rooms and food. Just a short stroll away is Yudanaka station where you can catch the bus to the snow monkeys. Well stocked Lawsons just near the station for snacks and drinks. Area had an authentic feel.

United StatesThe hotel is overall good. We had a terrible smell on our floor and close to our room. It smelled like a sewer pipe broke. Asked the hotel staff to help but they did not do much. Other than coming up and smelling and spraying some smelly air freshener which did not help at all. Breakfast and Onsen were nice. Free parking is another bonus.

Japanese style rooms and half board . The friendly stuff. The quiet village. Short access to the train station. Good restaurant nearby. Free drinks in the evening ( limited). Stuff can understand english

United StatesHonestly I can't think of anything that we disliked. (Except I wish we would've stayed for more than a day)
Staff: The staff at Tsubakino are incredible. We were running late due to us misreading the train timetable, they kindly messaged us and told us where to get off and had a driver pick us up in order to make it in time for dinner (Thank you very much). Food: We opted for the stay that included dinner, and it was 100% worth it. Dinner and breakfast were both multi-course meals that were absolutely delicious, would highly recommend paying for it. Location: 5 min walk from the train station that would take you to Nagano. The bus heading to the snow monkey park also left from that location. Room: We had a traditional tatami room with futon. We found it very comfortable. Onsen: There is an indoor and outdoor onsen that was great! This was my first experience in a public onsen, but the provided instructions made it pretty easy to follow.
