We had two stopovers one of 4 days the other only 1 day.
We had two stopovers one of 4 days the other only 1 day. We stayed at a hotel in Waikiki Beach, did a beach day, bought a Wiki bus ticket and rode the buses around the beach area (if you want to climb/walk at Diamond Head you need a separate booking for this) and into Honolulu city, with commentary from bus driver, another day and rented a car for around the island day trip on last day before dropping back at airport. This was a good length of time as not really wanting to spend more time on the beach. Second stop over was only 1 day so we stayed at the Airport Hotel with a shuttle and spent our day at the Pearl Harbour site which we accessed by local bus. Easy to self guide here dont need to buy expensive tour tickets. Both were good stays for us - if I was going for a beach holiday I think I would choose a resort to stay in.Guest review bySandraNew Zealand - 6.0

Kailua-Kona has nice beach/ocean access along Ali'i Drive and there are a few good restaurants. Snorkeling was great due to the amount and variety of fish we saw. For us it was too expensive, too busy and traffic could be bad at times. We were super disappointed that we had to pay almost $30 for 2 hours of parking in one of the parking lots near to end of Ali'i' drive to have dinner out one night. All of the free street parking was full. $30...Outrageous! We might be done with all of Hawaii at this point due to crowding and costs.Guest review byTracy - 8.0

The area is beautiful; however, the tragedy of the loss of the Old Town Lahaina casts a pall over the area. If you have memories of before the fire, it is very, very sad to see the remains of buildings and know that over 100 people lost their lives. The sentiment of Lahaina Strong is wonderful and uplifting but as you speak with residents, the current, somber message is that we will never regain what has been lost and there is no definitive plan or timeline for rebuilding. You are asked to not take photos and to respect the area. There is a bypass road that has been built.Guest review byGeorgeUnited States - 10.0
I LOVE Hilo!!! It still holds "The Essence of Hawaii."
I LOVE Hilo!!! It still holds "The Essence of Hawaii." It is not overrun with tall modern buildings, and "Tacky Tourist Attractions." It maintains an Old Hawaii Charm. You're not overwhelmed with street performers and aggressive sales people trying to pull you into their cosmetics stores. Yet there are still some homeless people there which is not good. However, I feel very safe in Hilo. There are nearby beautiful gardens and great beaches! Hilo is surrounded by so much natural beauty. There are some great restaurants there as well. I really like all of them, and I make sure to have at least one dinner at Hilo Bay Cafe. I also always make sure to visit the Imiloa Astronomy Center by UH Hilo. It is an excellent place to learn about the history & culture of Hawaii. And their planetarium has amazing presentations!Guest review byGayleUnited States - 10.0

Super nice people, lots to see and do at any pace. We could have used more time there. Food was excellent with everything we tried. Would have gone to a luau but found it expensive ...save our pennies for next time ;)Guest review byMarieCanada - 2.0

Facility itself was really great but… there were few homeless people in neighborhood and they seem to like that area. Other than that everything was good! Living room and bedroom has air conditioning, lots of kitchen stuff like coffee machine and rice cooker. Beach was very close and and love that place supplied beach chairs so we can watch sunset within 30sec walk. We saw few turtles on that beach as well.Guest review byRamintaCanada - 8.0

I live here and just needed to be near the hospital for a procedure, so the location was perfect. I was unable to eat (except for coffee) or go swimming so did not do any of those things but there are beautiful beaches nearby. There are so many things I could point out for travelers, but it would take pages! For me, Lihue is a place to mostly do anything legal, doctors and shopping.Guest review byBrownUnited States - 10.0
It is close to Volcano National Park.
It is close to Volcano National Park. In the park, there are many scenic hiking trails, interesting natural wonders, and with luck, an eruption. Facilities in the town are minimal, with limited dining and groceries.Guest review byPhilip - 8.0
We loved the location and how close we were to the beach!
We loved the location and how close we were to the beach! Lots of walking paths. Very quiet around the area, but the people above us were stomping across the floor at all hours of the night and early morning. The pool needs some bug control as we had flies on us non-stop and bites on us from the bugs. The host was very accommodating and gave us extra toiletries and even provided box fans which was really nice! The king bed was very comfortable. We would stay here again.Guest review byROBINUnited States
