South Lake Tahoe has made up for its relatively short history by rapidly developing into America’s all-year playground. The natural surrounds of the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe provide winter and water sports enthusiasts with plenty of action, and its well-renowned nightlife and proximity to Stateline in Nevada satisfies the partygoers.
There are a multitude of restaurants, bars and dance clubs set back from its sandy or rocky shores that are open around the clock. Jump aboard the old Mississippi paddle wheeler Tahoe Queen as she ploughs her way through the intense blue waters of the lake or you can choose for muscle power by going canoeing.
Not far from North America’s largest alpine lake is Heavenly Ski Resort that features an abundance of world-class ski runs all serviced by a large number of quality ski lifts. The runs provide something for everyone from beginners to the more experienced, and snowboarders to cross-country skiers.
The astonishing wilderness that surrounds South Lake Tahoe can be explored on mountain bike or by boat. Emerald Bay is particularly impressive with the magnificent Vikingsholm castle hidden amongst the pine-infested hills.

Unfortunately, South Lake Tahoe is not what it used to be.
Unfortunately, South Lake Tahoe is not what it used to be. I went there every year with my family growing up. I found it to be the land of "Not allowed", "restricted access", "private property do not enter", "no parking", "we don't have that anymore" and lastly - I got rear ended by a giant truck who couldn't see my low, red Corvette of his collosal vehicle. Everything is 'jacked up expensive' and it is far too crowded. Roadwork was horrendous. It seems every 4 blocks there were lanes closed due to road repairs (getting ready for the winter). A terrible dumpster fire of a vacation. I won't be visiting again. Plenty of people were there enjoying it - let them enjoy it. Not for me. Sad. I'm glad I didn't follow my dream of settling down there; I would have regretted it. We did, however, find a private beach that was public. I mean - it was unknown to most and a lovely place for me to set up my hammered dulcimer and play at sunrise. That was the highlight of the trip!Guest review byMarianUnited States - 8.0

It was good, very busy due to celebrity golf tournament. Would have visited at a different time if I knew that. We were able to walk to anywhere we needed to go. It snowed in May!!!
It snowed in May!!! The local coffee shop (Clyde’s coffee) had such a cute ambience that was so country style with great coffee. We saw a bear our first night and it was only in the parking lot of the motel. The area looks like it has lots of shops and tons to do in the snow or lake.
