Alexandria is a historic town on the Potomac with good transport links into Washington dc. It makes a good base away from the bustle of the big city, and is also convenient for visiting the Washington family home at Mount Vernon. There are various historic sites to visit in Alexandria, and plenty of choice of places to eat.

Old Town Alexandria is full of interesting shops, great variety of good restaurants, There is a free trolley that circulates up and down King St. with stops about every 2 blocks. We also found out on the last day that that the Alexandria city bus system (DASH) is also free to ride, providing a lot more options especially if you're not visiting with a car.

I had a wonderful time visiting Alexandria, Virginia! It’s truly one of the most charming and livable cities I’ve experienced. Everything about it felt clean, convenient, and safe, which made exploring the area comfortable and enjoyable from start to finish. What stood out to me most was the beautiful mix of natural and historic scenery. The tree-lined streets, quiet forested areas, and well-kept parks create a peaceful atmosphere, while the classic Virginia homes, many with colonial-style architecture, give the area a rich and timeless character. You can feel the city’s history as you walk around, especially near Old Town Alexandria, which offers cobblestone streets, waterfront views, and a variety of local shops and restaurants. Despite being so close to Washington, D.C., Alexandria maintains a calm and residential vibe, making it perfect for families, solo travelers, or anyone who enjoys a quieter pace. I always felt safe walking around, even in the evenings, and public transportation options made it easy to get around without a car. The parks and green spaces are also worth mentioning—many of them are ideal for walking, jogging, or just relaxing outdoors. You’ll find hidden trails, scenic picnic spots, and plenty of benches to sit and take it all in. It’s a perfect place for nature lovers and photographers alike. Overall, Alexandria is a picturesque, peaceful, and thoughtfully maintained city with a great balance of urban convenience and natural beauty. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting the Northern Virginia area or looking for a lovely weekend escape.

The restaurants where we ate were very good. We ate ate Outback Steakhouse, Chili's, Della J's, and a restaurant that served wings and BBQ. I cannot remember the name. All the restaurants were close to the Best Western Plus. The traffic was a little congested for me.

Easy access to DC by taxi. The downtown had lots of interesting shops and restaurants, a great Masonic temple to visit. There is a free trolley bus that runs up and down the Main Street. Great atmosphere.

This was the perfect hotel to stay at, price wise and convenience wise. We were only a short 15 minute drive to the white house, lincoln memorial, arlington cementary and the Washington monument. The room was extremely clean, it had everything you needed. We even walked down the street and checked out a resturant called The Grill Room which was amazing food! Very family friendly, we felt safe walking around which was a huge bonus.
