Code Review
This pull request adds a menuController to the DropdownMenu widget, allowing for external control over its state. The implementation, however, introduces a memory leak when switching between an internally managed and an externally provided MenuController. The internally created controller is not disposed of correctly. I've left a detailed comment with a suggested fix to address this lifecycle issue. It would also be beneficial to add a test case that covers the controller's lifecycle, specifically when switching between internal and external controllers, to prevent future regressions.

This logic introduces a memory leak. If an internal MenuController was created (when widget.menuController was null), and then the widget is updated with an external controller, the internal one is never disposed.
To fix this, you should manage the lifecycle of the internal controller, similar to how _localTextEditingController is handled in this class. This involves these changes:
-
In
_DropdownMenuState, replacelate MenuController _controller;with:MenuController? _localMenuController; MenuController get _controller => widget.menuController ?? (_localMenuController ??= MenuController());
-
In
initState, remove the line_controller = widget.menuController ?? MenuController();. -
In
dispose, add_localMenuController?.dispose();. -
Replace the current logic in
didUpdateWidgetwith the following to handle controller disposal:
if (widget.menuController != oldWidget.menuController) {
_localMenuController?.dispose();
_localMenuController = null;

MenuController doesn't have a dispose method 😓
