Inspiration

Inspired by mixed reality innovation, our platform transforms Philly’s mural art into digital experiences. By leveraging Google Maps' 2D and 3D views, we gamify the exploration of public art, creating an immersive journey where users can collect and engage with the city’s iconic murals while experiencing them as dynamic digital art. This project redefines how people interact with Philadelphia’s cultural landmarks, blending creativity, technology, and play to deepen engagement with public art.

What it does

The platform uses Google Maps' stylized design to highlight significant mural locations in Philadelphia. It integrates 3D models into the map’s 3D view, and pop-ups showcase digital art assets inspired by the murals. The website offers a gamified, interactive experience that encourages users to explore, collect, and engage with the city's public art in a fresh and dynamic way.

How we built it

We customized Google Maps with stylized design elements and integrated 3D models into its 3D views. Since the API doesn’t support dynamic models within the 3D view, we used external pop-ups for dynamic presentations. Along the way, we optimized user flow for seamless interaction, designed a cohesive UI, and tailored the platform for data collection based on Google Maps to make mural exploration informative and enjoyable.

Challenges we ran into

A significant challenge was the Google Maps API’s limitation in supporting dynamic models directly in 3D views. To overcome this, we implemented external pop-ups to present dynamic elements. Balancing technical constraints with the desire for an immersive experience required creative problem-solving and iterative design adjustments.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully developed a fully gamified experience that integrates Philadelphia’s mural art into a digital platform. Our team optimized user interactions, crafted a visually engaging UI, and created a customizable information hub that effectively showcases the city’s vibrant art scene. The result is an engaging and functional platform that bridges technology and public art.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned how to combine game design, mixed reality interactions, and digital asset art to build an immersive experience using Google Maps. This process also taught us how to navigate technical limitations creatively, enhancing our understanding of digital tools and their potential in reimagining public art engagement.

What's next for City of Murals

Building on the City of Murals concept, we aim to collaborate with digital artists and commercial brands to reimagine mural art through vibrant, youth-oriented reinterpretations. We envision producing trend-forward artistic outputs that resonate with modern audiences. Additionally, we hope to extend this project into the physical world with offline pop-up events, blending digital and physical experiences to further enhance engagement with mural-inspired art.
