Inspiration
With cities expanding rapidly, I wanted to build a practical tool that could help visualize environmental impact data. Using Google's new 3D Maps API and other sustainability-focused APIs available for this hackathon, I created GreenSpot to help people understand and improve their environmental footprint through clear, data-driven insights.
What it does
GreenSpot analyzes locations using multiple data points:
- Real-time air quality monitoring with color-coded visualization
- Solar potential assessment showing rooftop capabilities
- Transit accessibility mapping
- 15-minute walkability radius analysis
- Green space evaluation with density mapping
- Sustainability scoring based on analysis of solar, green space, walkability, air quality and transit.
- AI-powered location insights
How we built it
Leveraged key Google Maps Platform features:
- 3D Map elements like Polygon and Polylines for immersive visualization
- Solar API for building analysis
- Air Quality API for pollution metrics
- Places API for location intelligence
- Gemini API for sustainability insights
- Custom scoring algorithms using React components
- Layer-based visualization system
Challenges we ran into
- Accurate 3D solar panel placement geometry
- Creating balanced scoring algorithms
- Ensuring smooth transitions between analysis modes
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a functional sustainability analysis tool
- Integrated multiple Google APIs
- Developed efficient 3D data visualization for solar panels (still needs improvement)
What we learned
- 3D mapping implementation techniques
- How Solar panels are installed and what an Azimuth angle is
- Refreshed some Mathematics
- Environmental data APIs by Google
- Multi-factor sustainability analysis
What's next for Green Spot
- Additional data sources integration
- Historical trend analysis
- Community feedback system
