Subject: For the GNOME menu, please use the Debian swirl instead of the
"foot" icon
Date: Sun, 22 Feb 2009 12:27:21 +0100
Package: gnome-panel
Version: 2.24.2-3
Severity: wishlist
Dear GNOME maintainers,
I believe the Debian GNOME desktop could use some decent branding.
Please replace the "foot" icon next to the Applications menu in the
upper left corner with a Debian swirl. It is common practice in nearly
every other distribution to replace this icon with something
distribution-specific and thus provide some recognition value. Also, it
does not look redundant with the icon of the "Debian" submenu, since
nowadays this is disabled by default anyway.
Thank you so much for the effort you put in the Debian GNOME desktop!
Cheers,
Fabian

Hi,
Put a distribution specific logo here is a common way to obtain
certain recognition value, nowadays, in many other distributions. But
I wonder if Debian should follow the tradition definitely, given the
good long history that the official appearance is unchanged. An
obvious fact is that the new start-here logo looks not in tune with
other default appearance settings of gnome packaged by Debian. So, I
suggest to keep the official start-here logo and provide
Debian-specific one as an option or even another separate theme
package.
This is my personal opinion. Any suggestions are welcome :)

Hello,
I completely agree with what Wang said above.
Plus, what exactly is this new icon ? It's not a Debian swirl, it's
not a Gnome foot, it's something between both and it's just FUGLY.
Please adopt either a standard Debian swirl, or the normal Gnome foot
(it was perfect and I loved the fact that Debian didn't change it) but
not some kind of monstrosity like the one we have now.
Thanks for the effort anyway,
Keep it up.

In theory, that sounds good. In practice, that implies using diversions,
which are BAD(tm), and it has a chance to break icon caching, so it’s
not that simple.

Maybe we could work with a fallback icon? How about this:
- The original start-here icon in the gnome-icon-theme package is
renamed to start-here-gnome
- The Debian swirl logo will be provided as start-here icon in the
desktop-base package
- gnome-icon-theme recommends desktop-base
- If desktop-base is not installed, GNOME applications won't find the
start-here icon anymore and should use the start-here-gnome icon
instead (fallback)
This way the Debian desktop would be branded by default. The branding
could be easily removed and the original state restored by removing
the desktop-base package. No diversions between packages would be
necessary in this scenario. Sounds reasonable?
Cheers,
Fabian

I don’t know whether the fallback mechanism will work as expected.
Instead, I think the safe route is to use diversions.

Alright. So the branding will be removed as soon as desktop-base is
removed? Or maybe another package, debian-brading, should be
introduced (maybe even from the desktop-base source) that also
contains branded splash screens for e.g. gimp, ooo, etc. I think a
similar approach has once been presented on planet.d.o.

After changing the alternative, you need to regenerate the cache with
"update-icon-caches /usr/share/icons/gnome".
I have added this mention in the documentation, but for this to happen
automatically, update-alternatives would have to support hooks, and
currently this is not the case.
