Subject: Please add "overwrite all" and "overwrite all under subtree" replies to modified conffile options
Date: Mon, 5 May 2003 21:31:16 +0200
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.10.10
Severity: wishlist
Hi,
when a package has a huge number of conffiles that change during an upgrade
(e.g. the /etc/X11 subtree), it's annoying to have to press "y" for each
file to overwrite (or "n", for that matter). (I don't know why dpkg picks
them up as modified, as I certainly didn't touch them, but I could have, so
the report is still valid.)
It would be nice to have an option to overwrite all modified conffiles for
this package, or this subtree, or this session (and, likewise, to never
overwrite conffiles for this package, subtree or session).
Andrew

I am sorry, but that is not quite what I requested. It would need to be
specified when dpkg is invoked; it also doesn't allow the user to say 'yes
to all under subtree', let alone 'no to all under subtree'.
What I envisioned was this:
- user does apt-get dist-upgrade
- dpkg starts, unpacks packages
- configuration phase begins
- user can select on a per-package, per-directory basis what to do with all
subsequent changed config files
--force-confnew doesn't come close. Please reopen the bug and add a
'wontfix' or 'help' tag if you don't feel like implementing the feature, but
don't just pretend there is nothing to do.
Thanks
Andrew
