Please build the package with a different lua version so we can drop lua5.2
from the archive. My team upload that moved to lua5.4 was reverted with the
claim that "The vlc script ecosystem expects certain versions of lua and lua5.4
is not one of them."

Please consider that a lot of Linux distros outside the Debian world
have moved on to lua5.4, which is the only upstream supported version by
the way. So if others can do it, the claim should be substantiated.

Would a downgrade to lua5.1 work? That version is still very popular in
the archive and is the one that is the closest to 5.2.

Have you actually checked that popular lua scripts from
addons.videolan.org and other sites are compatible with lua5.4 before
doing the upload?

The scripts contained in vlc itself are compatible with 5.4, but there
are more than that. See above. Unless you have checked, it is you that
needs to substantiate the claims.
