Top 3 Google IO announcements driving app revenue in 2025
Today’s focus highlights the latest updates designed to help streamline subscription offerings and maximize revenue on Play. A quick overview is available in the video below, with full details provided here.
1. Subscriptions with Add-ons: Streamlining Subscriptions for Developers and Users
Google Play has announced multi-product checkout for subscriptions, a feature designed to simplify the purchase flow and create a unified experience for both developers and users. This enhancement allows developers to sell subscription add-ons alongside base subscriptions, while maintaining a single, aligned payment schedule.
The result is a simplified user experience with just one price and one transaction, offering greater control over how subscribers upgrade, downgrade, or manage add-ons. Those interested in learning more can explore how to create add-ons.
“You can now sell base subscriptions and add-ons together in a single, streamlined transaction on Google Play.”
2. Showcasing Benefits in More Places Across Play: Increasing Visibility and Value
To help developers retain more subscribers, Google Play is expanding how subscription benefits are showcased across key areas of the platform. These areas include the Subscriptions Center, reminder emails, and the purchase and cancellation processes. According to Google, this increased visibility has already reduced voluntary churn by 2%.
Developers can take advantage of this capability by entering subscription benefits details in Play Console.
“To help reduce voluntary churn, we’re showcasing your subscriptions benefits across Play.”
3. New Grace Period and Account Hold Duration: Decreasing Involuntary Churn
To help developers maximize revenue and reduce unintended subscription losses caused by payment method failures, Google Play is extending grace periods and account hold durations.
Developers can now customize the grace period—during which users retain access while renewal is attempted—and the account hold period—during which access is suspended. The grace period can be set for up to 30 days and the account hold period for up to 60 days, with a combined maximum recovery period of 60 days.
This allows users more time to update payment information instead of facing immediate cancellation. Google reports that developers who have already extended their decline recovery period from 30 to 60 days have seen an average 10% reduction in involuntary churn for renewals.
“Developers who extend their decline recovery period see an average 10% reduction in involuntary churn.”
Additional Efforts to Optimize Conversion Across the Buyer Lifecycle
Beyond subscriptions, Google Play continues investing in ways to optimize conversion throughout the entire buyer lifecycle. This includes boosting purchase-readiness by prompting users to set up payment methods and verification during device setup. These prompts have also been integrated into visible areas such as the Play and Google account menus.
Additionally, Google is enabling payments in more markets, expanding payment options, and leveraging AI models to optimize in-app transactions by suggesting the right payment method at the right time. Effective cart abandonment reminders are also being deployed to bring buyers back.
