7 INVENTD Beilssued'Dec. 12, 1871.
MOSES P WILMARTH improvement in Lubricating Bolster for Spinning Machines.
WITNESSES;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MOsEs P. WILMA T 'OE NORTH PROVIDENCE, a. 1., ASSIGNOR To ALVIN F. .TENKS, STEPHEN A. 'JENKS, JOHN R. FALES, AND FRANCIS -J. RABBETH.
IMPROVEMENT lN LUBZRICATING 'BOLSTERS FOR SPINNING-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MOSES l WILMARTH, of North Providence, (formerly of Smithfield,) in. the county of"P1'o\-'ide1ice and'State oi li-hode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Seli liubricating Holster for Spindles; andI do hereby declare that the ibllmvin'g specification,
taken in connection with the drawing making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. v
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section in a plane through the axis oi'the spindle and bolster. Figs. 2, 3, i, 5, and 6 are detailed parts, to be referred to hereafter. i
In the accompanying drawing, A, Fi 1, represents a spindle, and l) l) the bolster within which the spimlle-runs. Theupper end of the bolster Dis made with an annular rec ess or chamher, (1, concentric with the bearing in the bolster. The otiice of this recess is to hold a supply of oil to he used for lubricating the spindle, and as there is noduct leading from the bottom of the recess to the spindle-.bcariug, as in many bolsters of previous construction, the oil can reach the'spii'id-le only by being conveyed over the edge of the inner wall of the annular chamber c, which shouldbe made ta iering toward the top, as shown at liigs, 1 and 6. E isa disk of some fibrous material, as, for instance, woolen cloth,
having a central hole to. accommodate the spindie. This disk may be soar-ranged that its outer ed ge 1 Fig. 2, shall rest on the bot-tom of the recess 0, and its inner edge fbe in contact with the spindle; or it may be arranged to cover the annular chamber '0, as shown at l i g. 1. In the. former case, the oil will beconductcd to the spindle partly by the capillary attraction ot' .the fibers of the absorbent E and partlyby the tendency which a film of viscous fluid has when in'contact with a rapidly-revel vi n g spindle to draw after it a li'u'ger Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,190, dated July 7, 1863; reissue N 0. 4,666, dated Dec-ember 12, 1871.
body of the same fluid with which it is connected. Under the arrangement of the disk E, shown 'in Fig. 1., the fibrous material serves principally to prevent any excess of flow of oil from the chamber, and more equally distributes 1t about the bearing of the spindle. For the purpose of protecting the absorbent E and the oil-chamber c from dust I prefer to cover the bolster with a cap, 0, Figs. 1 and 3. This cap has upon its upper surface a concave channel, 0, in which is an aperture, 0, Fig. 4, through which oil poured into the channel of the cap will find its way to the absorbent E and to the channel a.
I do not claim regulatingthe supply of oil or other lubricating material to a bearing by means Of the capillary attraction of fibrous matters,
neitherdo claim a bolster furnished with an an; nular recess around the spindle-bearing, and
with duct-s to convey the oil to the bearing; in
con-ibination with an absorbent to check the flow of the oil: through the ducts, as this latter is.
shown in-the patent granted to E. N. SlJGBl'G Januaryfll,1$62;.but-
What I do claim as-my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
l. A close-botton1 oil-chamber, c, with a tapering inner wall formed in the head of a bolster, 1.), in combination with a spindlebearing,-sub stantially asdescribed.
fl. -'.l.he combination of'the above-described oilchamber 0', the fibrous--a-bsorbent E, and the spinills-bearing, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the cap (1, the absorbent E, the oil-chamber c, and'spiinlle-bearing, substantially as described.
