Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD S. MOM LIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Cottages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tent or cottage construction wherein the roof or walls are canvas or equivalent material and consists particularly in an improved construction of framework and an improved method of securing the roof and wall covering thereon to provide for efiicient ventilation and to effectively prevent leaking of water into the interior and also prevent tearing of the covering by shrinkage due to the same becoming wet, this application being divisional of my application filed September 20, 1909, Serial Number 518,461.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved cottage; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same broken away and illustrating the operation of part of the roof supporting mechanism; Fig. 3 is a section in detail of. one of the roof supports; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. is an end view of the framework broken away; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one end of the cottage with the outer roof removed.
In the drawings the side walls are shown composed of a number of metal sections 2, suitably connected together and carrying connected roof sections 3 forming a support for the inner roof 4, the wall sections forming a support for the walls 5 of canvas or other suitable material. The end wall 6 of the roof and the side edges of the roof are suitably connected to the wall sections 5 as by the overlapping flaps 7, which may be secured together by buttons 8. The meeting edges of the end and side walls are likewise suitably connected together. For the purpose of supporting the supplemental roof or fly B I support above the roof sections 3 by means of end standards 9 a suitable ridge pole 10, and support at the outer ends of the roof sections eaves supporting bars 11. The bars are each centrally connected with the adjacent horizontal bar 12 of the side wall of the framework by an arm 13 which arm has loose slot and pin connection 14 with the bar 12. Thus the arm 13 may be swung upwardly springing the center of the bar 11 with it. The object of this is to compensate for the shrinkage of the fly roof as indicated by the full and dotted lines in Fig. 2. As the outer or fly roof shrinks, as when it is wet, it will assume the full line position shown in Fig. 2 by the swinging upwardly of the arms 13 and springing of the eaves bar 11, thus preventing tearing. The roof frame 3 is preferably supported and strengthened by suitable corner brackets 15 secured over the corners of the frame sec tions and each formed with an upwardly extending flange 16 arranged to fit against and support the .roof framework 3.
The inner roof 4 is formed with suitable screen ventilating openings 17 to allow circulation of air through the interior of the tent, any passage of rain through said ventilating openings being prevented by the fly roof B. In addition to forming a protection againstthe rain the fly roof being spaced from the inner roof in the manner shown also protects the interior of the cottage from the heat. By having the roof and wall coverings buttoned upon the framework as shown and also formed of sections buttoned together it will be evident that the same may be easily unbuttoned and raised from the bottom or lowered from the top or any one side may be removed without disturbing the remaining portion of the wall and roof coverings and thus may be easily and quickly converted into a partially open construction.
The wall sections as shown are preferably made of angle iron so that screening may be easily and simply supported therein so that a framework of the maximum strength and rigidity may be obtained.
\Vhere necessary to hold down the eaves bar 11 to prevent it from being swung upwardly by wind, I provide a spring 18 connected at one end with the eaves bar and at its other end, as by suitable cord 19, with the lower portion of the adjacent side wall section.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a knockdown cottage comprising wall sections and a roof support, a roof covering said support, a supplementary roof centrally supported above said main roof, eaves bars supporting said supplementary roof at points outside the side wall sections, the ends of said eaves bars being rigidly connected with the adjacent ends of said wall 2. In a knockdown cottage of the class described comprising wall sections and aroof support, a roof covering said support, an interspaced supplementary roof supported above said main roof, means for supporting the outer edges of said supplementary roof comprising arms extending downward rigidly from the ends of each side wall section, eaves bars connecting the ends of said arms, and an arm hingedly connecting each eaves bar and the adjacent wall section intermediate of said rigid arms.
3. In a knockdown cottage of the class described comprising Wall and roof sections, a covering roof for said roof sections, rigid arms extending downwardly in alinement from said root sections at the ends of the side wall sections, a supplementary roof arranged above said main roof and supported at its outer edges by the ends of said projecting roof supporting arms, and a yielding connection between the outer edge of said supplementary root and adjacent wall sections intermediate of its ends for the purpose set forth.
4. In a knockdown cottage comprising wall sections, a roof support thereon, a roof covering said support, a supplementary roo't' supported above said main roof and extending downwardly beyond the side wall sections, means for fixedly supporting the outer edges of the supplementary rooI at a point outside the corners of the side wall sections,
l and means for int-ermediately yieldingly supporting the outer edges of the roof from the wall sections. 40
