SPUR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1911.
Application filed May 9, 1910. Serial No. 560,179.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'FREDERICK C. Monrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spurs, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in spurs and the objects of my improvements are simplicity and economy in construction and convenience and efliciency in use.
In the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of my spur in position on a boot. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the spur on an enlarged scale, on the line m w of Fig 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of part of my spur, on the line y y of Fig. l, the outline of the boot being shown in dotted line.
A is the body of a spur embodying my invention and comprises lateral main arms 10 arranged in the usual I.) formation to embrace the heel of the boot D and meeting at the apex 11 at which point there is a back wardly projecting rowel stud 12 provided with a rowel B. At their outer extensions 13 remote from the said apex 11 the said main arms 10 are bent upwardly at an obtuse angle and continued upward and forward for a relatively short distance so as to form branch arms 15. The extreme ends of the said branch arms 15 are provided with buttons 17 for receiving an ankle strap which may be made of two parts adjustably connected. At the apex 13 of the said obtuse angle between the main arms 10 and the branch arms 15 there is provided. means for connection for an instep member or lower strap C comprising a tip 18 secured at each end of the said instep member C engaged with a bar 19 at the said apex 13. The said instep member C is shown as composed of multiple chains 20. The said tip 18 is composed of sheet metal strip of a width corresponding to the combined width of the said multiple chains 20 and secured thereto by its lower end 21 and comprises above said lower end 21 an upwardly extending shank 27 and an upper end which is curled over to form a sleeve 22 suitable for a bearing support for the said instep member 0 and to engage for such support with the said bar 19. The latter is formed by providing a longitudinal opening or slot 23 in the end 13 of each of the said main arms 10 suitable for receiving the said strip forming the tip 18 and preferably slightly inclined to the general plane of the main arms 10. Accordingly the bar 19 assumes a position across the apex of the said angle 13 and remote from the said main arms 10 and branch arms 15. The said bearing bar 19 is offset outwardly on each side, being supported by laterally directed arms 2% integral with the arms 10 and 15 and of appreciable length, so that the said tip 18 will be positively supported outside of and away from the inner bearing faces 25 of the adjacent junction 13 of the arms or outside of the general body A of the spur.
The position of the bar 19 as described assures a clearance between the tip 18 and the side of the boot D, limiting the contact of the said instep member C with the boot D to the chain members 20 and the parts of the boot adjacent the same, and which contact is thereby confined essentially to the instep 28 of the boot D.
By my invention the tip is assured freedom of movement and the contact surface at the end of the main arms is limited to the inner contact surface of the arms proper.
It is apparent that some changes from the specific construction herein disclosed may be made and therefore I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form of construction shown and described, but desire the liberty to make such changes, in working my invention, as may fairly come within the spirit and scope of the same.
I claim as my invention In a spur, main lateral arms, branch arms, and an instep member, each of the said main arms connected to a branch arm by an obtuse angled portion and the said instep memher connected by its ends directly to the apeXes of the said portions, the said portions provided with a bar, means for flexibly attaching the instep member consisting of a metallic loop forming a tip to the instep member engaged with the said bar 011 the said apex, and the said bar oflf-set so that the Witnesses R. J. P. NUss.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. G.
said tip Will beheld away from contact With a boot When the said spur is in normal position on the said boot.
