Application filed January 14, 1910.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, REINOLD STAEHLE, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Mount Vernon, county of lVestchester, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Soldering-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in soldering tools of the kind in which the body or the tip portion of the tool is maintained sufficiently hot to remain in working condition.
An object of the invention is to prevent the flame being accidentally extinguished.
Suitable means will prevent the handle or tank part from becoming too hot for handling or manipulation.
This invention is set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawing in whichl Figure 1- shows a side elevation of a soldering tool embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section along the line m w Fig. l. Fig. l is a section along the line y y Fig. l.
In this drawing is shown a reservoir or tank which can also be made to form a handle as indicated at a.. The combustible can be of any suitable well known kind such as benzin or the like. The tank a can contain a suitable wick or absorbent Z).
An air pump is indicated at c which, when its piston is reciprocated, compresses the air in the tank a and forces the volatile liquid into the wick. The tank can be supplied bv a suitable filling openingas indicated at o? which can be closed by a screw cap. A screw-cap or nipple e can also be applied at the rear portion back of the pump-stem or tank. From the tank leads an outlet tube f the front part f of which is suitably shaped to .form a valve casing through which the combustible can pass from the outlet tube By means of a suitably operated regulating spindle valve z' the out-flow of combustible or vapor from the valve casing can be regulated.
The combustible passing oit from the burner tip 7c and suitably consumed in the flame tube m will strike the tip a of the tool to maintain the same suitably heated.
A heating trough o suspended by a suitable bail p from the valve casing f can be used for starting the heating of the tool.
No claim for novelty is made for the parts thus far described.

The outlet tube f is surrounded by a casing g suitably spaced and it can be ventilated by means of openings 1^ so as to prevent eX- cessive heat from being conducted by tube f to the tank a and prevent the latter becoming too ho-t for manipulation. The casing q is provided with a movable sleeve s which can be slid or adjusted to cover the ventilating openings r to greater or less extent so as to control or regulate the flow of air through the openings 1 to the tube f.
Heat from the. soldering tip end n is conducted by a suitable heat conductor such as a metallic bar t to a connecting piece u and the heat thus conducted will maintain suflicient warmth in the combustible or vapor from the burner tip c so that the flame can be easily maintained in the burner tube m which is shown as provided with ventilating openings or slits. The connecting piece a can be made to straddle the valve casing f and can be suitably clamped by a screw fu. The heat conductor t can be clamped or secured in the connecting piece u by a screw 2. The soldering tip is provided with a hood which partly covers it, a portion thereof being shaped to clasp the heat conductor t and one end of the burner tip m.
I claim 1. A device of the kind described, comprising a tank having a casing projecting therefrom, an outlet tube located inthe casing and communicating wit-h the tank, a cooling chamber formed between the casing 'and the outlet tube, said casing having a series of Ventilating passages near the tank and leading to the cooling chamber, and a movable sleeve mounted on the casing adapted to regulate the area of the ventilating passages.
2. A device of the kind described, comprising a tank having an .outlet tube, a surrounding spaced casmg for the tube provided with ventilating passages, a movable sleeve for regulating the area of the ventilating passages, a valve casing connected to the outlet tube, a soldering tip and a heat conductor connecting the soldering tip to the valve casing.
